What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Guests often praise the Grand Hotel Villa de France for its exceptional location, historic charm, and the warm, attentive service from staff like Safae. While many appreciate the 'homey' feel and artistic legacy, some note that certain amenities and attention to detail fall short of modern five-star expectations, particularly regarding breakfast and room provisions.
"We recently stayed at the Grand Hotel Villa de France and were fortunate to be looked after by Safae. She was an amazing host and truly made our experience special. Her customer service was exceptional — warm, attentive, and professional throughout.
As visitors from England, we really appreciated how fluent she was in both French and English, making communication effortless. Safae went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed, always with a smile.
She is a real credit to the hotel, and we cannot thank her enough for making our stay so memorable. Highly recommended!"

"I love this hotel. It’s very homey. Younger and older staff are all extremely kind. Particularly the Staff at breakfast. Comfy bed, Charming rooms, Excellent showers, Pleasant Pool, Location is spot on. I’m always looking forward to coming back. This is my second time and there will certainly be a third one.
Yes, of course it’s not a real five stars, but the price is absolutely reasonable for what you get."

"This a lovely hotel right in the heart of the old town of Tangier.
2 minutes walk to the main streets and 10 minutes walk to the port and beaches.
Take away the surroundings and you could think that you are in the French riviera and that James Bond could turn up at any time.
Being a five star hotel it certainly has the charm and feel to it.
Having spent a week there we felt it was let down by the attention to detail in what it takes to be a five star hotel.
1. No bottled water supplied to the room.
2. Extremely cheap toilet rolls in the rooms.
3. On three occasions we had to ask for new towels as they weren't replaced after cleaning.
4. The coffee machine at breakfast was terrible as was the coffee.
5. The toaster took between ten and fifteen minutes to make your toast.
6. The breakfast offering could have been better.
7. Every morning we had to ask for a teaspoon for the coffee.
8. We only had one sachet of tea and one coffee in our room and no milk.
9. The safe in our room had battery acid leaking out of the safe door.
Don't let this put you off as the hotel is probably the best around the area.
The management just need to work on the little things a bit more.
And yes, we would stay there again, and please get a better coffee machine and toaster."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
A Glimpse into History and Art
Perhaps its most celebrated connection is to the renowned artist Henri Matisse. During his stay in Tangier in 1913, Matisse found inspiration within the hotel, famously painting his masterpiece, 'Window at Tangier,' from Room 35. Visiting this room offers a unique opportunity to connect with a pivotal moment in art history and appreciate the very view that captivated the artist.
Today, the hotel strives to maintain this old-world charm, offering a unique atmosphere that transports guests to a different era. While some modern amenities might be less cutting-edge, the hotel's historical depth and artistic legacy provide an experience that is both enriching and memorable.
Navigating Tangier from Your Base
For those looking to experience the waterfront, the port and beaches are just a 10-minute walk away. This allows for spontaneous strolls along the coast or easy access to ferry services. The hotel's position within the former diplomatic quarter also means you're surrounded by a sense of historical grandeur, with many architectural gems nearby.
When venturing further afield, such as to the airport, Grand Taxis are the most common and efficient mode of transport. While the hotel may provide quotes, it's wise to confirm prices with drivers directly to ensure you're getting a fair rate, as noted by some travelers. This central location, combined with practical transport options, ensures that exploring Tangier and its surroundings is a seamless experience.
Understanding the Guest Experience
However, some reviews point out areas where the hotel falls short of a typical five-star standard. These include the absence of complimentary bottled water, the quality of toilet paper, and occasional lapses in housekeeping, such as not replacing towels. The breakfast experience, while pleasant, has also drawn criticism for slow toasters and subpar coffee. The hotel's outdated elements are acknowledged, though many still find the overall ambiance charming and the price reasonable for what is offered.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the location is consistently praised as 'spot on,' making it a desirable choice for those seeking a blend of history, character, and convenience in Tangier. The hotel's management is encouraged to focus on the 'little things' to elevate the guest experience further.
