What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Pepergasthuis for its incredibly quiet and peaceful atmosphere, offering a unique escape within the city center. The charming historic almshouse setting and beautiful communal garden are consistently highlighted as major draws. However, some guests note the limited amenities in the guesthouse, such as a weak shower stream and the absence of an oven or microwave, and occasional noise from the busy street.
"Quiet and peaceful. The atmosphere is tangibly different from the surrounding city. Great for a 5-minute stroll, or a brief sit on one of the many benches. It's very cute and well-kept. They have some photo exhibitions that show some fun then and now scenes. There are a few nice cats you can pet, too."

"I have scheduled a seven day visit. This BnB is part of a former almshouse and has a charming, private garden, bicycle shed for residents and two gates to enter the property.
The guesthouse is on the busy street so there is traffic and pedestrian noise. It is across the street from a police station and a cathedral. The church does sometimes toll the bells.
The guesthouse is a one-room studio apartment on the ground level. There is an apartment next door that has the floor above the guesthouse. The neighbor’s walking is heard and felt.
To gain entry, keys are left in a small box near the front door. After payment is received the combination is sent. When you leave you must also return the keys to the box. There is a caretaker for the BnB but she was on vacation when I arrived. The salesperson / owner does respond to emails and the caretaker responds to phone calls.
I had trouble turning on the gas stove but got directions from the owner. There is a knob beneath the stove in the cabinet. That knob must be turned to the left. That permits gas to flow to the stove.
The guesthouse is around the corner from restaurants, a grocery store and other attractions. It is in the city center, making it a great place to stay due to its location.
The almshouses were built to provide housing for the needy and the sick. All the historic almshouses have magnificent gardens and grounds. This guesthouse has very beautiful grounds and benches and chairs are dotted about to give you a chance to sit and absorb the atmosphere.
Important to know: there are two twin beds side by side. The shower has a weak stream and is hooked to the bathroom sink/tap. There is no dishwasher or oven or microwave. The refrigerator does have a small freezer. There is no bathtub.
There are dishes, pots and pans and detergent. The kitchen also has tea, a kettle and coffee and a coffee maker. Shower gel is provided in the bathroom. Bring your own toothpaste.
The main doors to the property are locked at 10 pm. Entry is the only possible by key through the back gate."

"Fascinating piece of history. A beautiful quiet and peaceful communal housing area. At the far end there is even a lovely B&B. A place to stay in the middle of the city."
