Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Beemster Polder for its unique UNESCO-listed geometric landscape and the opportunity to experience traditional Dutch dairy farming. The cycling routes are a major draw, offering scenic exploration. However, some note that visitor information can be lacking and that dedicated hiking trails are absent.

"The visitor center apparently doesn't open until 1 p.m. on Saturdays, but it wasn't indicated anywhere on the website. There are no hiking trails, only cycling routes. The information signs in the village are nice, but in extremely poor condition. Not good for a World Heritage site!"

Sarah Van Borm

"The Beemster Polder dates back to the early 17th century. It has retained its well-ordered landscape of fields, roads, canals, dikes, and settlements—designed according to the principles of classical and Renaissance planning. The Beemster amply illustrates how the Dutch reclaimed large swaths of land. This reclamation project was established because water threatened the cities and there was a need for more agricultural land. A sturdy 42-kilometer dike was built around the lake, and a ring canal was dug around it. The lake was then drained using 43 windmills. On May 19, 1612, the polder was dry.

In 1612, the Beemster polder was drained, and the development of the polder could begin. Roads were constructed, ditches and land parcels were dug, and farms were built. All of this was done according to an orderly and strict geometric pattern. The Beemster owes its fame to this rational division and layout. The Beemster Polder has been a World Heritage Site since 1999."

The Engineering Marvel of the Beemster Polder

The Beemster Polder is a remarkable feat of 17th-century engineering, a testament to the Dutch mastery of water management. Drained in 1612, this former lake was transformed into a fertile agricultural landscape following principles of classical and Renaissance planning. The process involved building a sturdy 42-kilometer dike and using 43 windmills to pump out the water, a monumental task for its time. Instagram

The resulting landscape is characterized by its orderly and strict geometric pattern. This includes a precise grid of fields, roads, and canals, designed for optimal land use and water control. This rational division and layout are what make the Beemster Polder so unique and visually striking, earning it its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. InstagramReddit

Visitors can still witness this historical planning today, with the landscape largely retaining its original structure. It serves as an exceptional illustration of how the Dutch have historically reclaimed and shaped their land, a continuous battle against the water that has defined their nation. Reddit

Experiencing Beemster Cheese

Beemster cheese is more than just a local product; it's an integral part of the polder's identity. The unique blue sea clay soil of the Beemster Polder is rich in minerals, contributing to the growth of special grasses. These grasses, in turn, produce milk with a softer and sweeter fat content compared to milk from other regions in the Netherlands. Instagram

This exceptional milk is used to create the renowned Beemster cheese, a type of Gouda. Whether aged for a few months or longer, it offers a distinct flavor profile. A 4-month aged Beemster Goat Gouda, for instance, is described as smooth and sweet with a clean finish. Instagram Many visitors enjoy visiting local cheese farms and dairies to learn about the cheese-making process and, of course, to sample the delicious results. Instagram+1

Events like the annual Beemster Food Tour celebrate the region's culinary heritage, showcasing local produce and delicacies, with Beemster cheese often taking center stage. Instagram Experiencing Beemster cheese is a delicious way to connect with the agricultural heart of the polder.
