Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the bracing coastal walk and the abundant wildlife, particularly seals and seabirds, with stunning views across to Taiaroa Head. The Mole's unique history as a man-made structure built on shipwrecks adds to its appeal. Some note the strong winds and lack of shelter, making it a place best enjoyed when prepared for the elements.

"A bracing walk in cool, windy weather... no shelter out here. Wonderful views of Tairoa Head and the Albatross colony across the harbour entrance. Lots of wildlife, especially seals, so you need to be aware of your surroundings so that you keep your distance. We saw one in the water catch a huge fish, amazing sight. A few people fishing"

Tony Corbett

"Absolutely loved walking along the sea wall. Saw several seals at the end of the wall along the rocks. The views are great. On one side the beach and the other the spit. It’s also the entrance to the bay where Port Chalmers is. So it would be cool to come back here when a cruise ship is passing. Also across the way is the lighthouse and end of the otago. All in all a perfect place to spend an hour."

Andrew Barch

"The Mole (spit) is a man made Peninsula at the northern opening of the Otago Harbour. It's built on a series of ship wrecks and covered with rocks. You may see an abundance of sea life, including Sea Lions, Seals, Penguins and lots of sea birds."
