Tackle the Terrain: Gear Up for Karioi

Mount Karioi is a challenging hike, often described as a 'jungle gym' with muddy sections. Sturdy hiking boots are essential for grip and to navigate the slippery terrain. Plan for at least 5 hours for a round trip, and bring plenty of snacks and water as there are limited resting spots and no toilets on the trail.

Summit Success: Timing is Everything

The Mount Karioi track is best tackled on a sunny day to minimize mud and maximize the incredible views. While some find the Ruapuke Road side easier, both routes are demanding. Consider starting early to avoid the midday heat and allow ample time for the ascent and descent, especially if you're not an experienced hiker.

Reviews Summary

Mount Karioi is a highly rewarding but very challenging hike, often described as a 'jungle gym' with steep, muddy terrain. While the summit views are spectacular and the sense of accomplishment is immense, hikers should be prepared for a strenuous 5-hour round trip with no facilities. Proper footwear and ample supplies are essential.

"It takes 4 hours return to the lookout and then plus 2 hours return to the summit. Of course, many people climb quickly. It took me(us) 5 hours return just to the lookout. lots of fun and challenging. I will miss here.
There is no toilet. And there are not really resting spot on the way top. you may fine one somewhere."

"A very challenging walk indeed. We started on the Ruapuke Road side which is supposedly easier than the Whaanga Road side. It was still an exhausting walk up to the top but well worth it for the views and the sense of accomplishment. It is a fairly muddy track so choose a sunny day to go. We completed the walk in 1:20hours and that was with regular breaks and very slow walking at the end 😛 coming down only took an hour though. Do it!"

"Well, this is the highest mountain I’ve climbed so far. (I’m a noob when it comes to mountaineering.) This really is a jungle gym, quite dangerous and I’m stoked to climb higher mountains. Worth the muscle pains and mud slips. More like a training ground for noobs like me :) Love the View! Spent a good hour chillin on the helipad 😂"
