What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the otherworldly beauty and unique geothermal features of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, particularly the vibrant Champagne Pool and the Artist's Palette. While the strong sulfur smell is a common observation, most agree the experience is well worth it, especially when exploring the extensive walking trails. The daily Lady Knox Geyser eruption is a memorable spectacle, though some note its artificial nature.
"This place was a fun and unique experience! We did the 45-minute hike, which was manageable and enjoyable. Just be aware of the strong sulfur smell coming from the volcano—it’s quite pungent and smells like rotten eggs. I recommend bringing a mask or face covering to help with the odor. The volcanic smoke was fascinating to see, and the bright yellow color of the rocks from the sulfur made the landscape feel almost otherworldly. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for something different!"

"We choose not to come for the artificially generated geyser, but that did not matter. The visit to Waiotapu was a true magical wonder.
I was in awe at so many points during this walk by the diversity of the incredible nature here. It is mind-blowing to see how much volcanic activity there is in this area.
Do the full walk, you will not regret it. We have spent about 2.5 hours in this wonderland.
Highly recommended! You can just buy tickets at the door."

"Definitely worth a visit. The geyser is pretty weird though. They stuff soap in it to make it erupt. I definitely recommend the walk though. I do thunk Te Puia is more photogenic and accessible (but much smaller for the geothermal portion)."
