Reviews Summary
The Duke of Marlborough Hotel offers a historic stay with stunning waterfront views and a vibrant, old-world bar. While many praise the fresh, locally sourced food and friendly staff, some guests have experienced service delays and inconsistent meal quality. The hotel's prime location and charming ambiance are consistently highlighted as major draws.
"We had a truly memorable experience at the Duke of Marlborough Hotel. From the moment we arrived, the friendly and hard-working staff made us feel welcome and well cared for. The highlight of our stay was the exceptional dinner for our special occasion—every dish was a delight. The snapper was incredibly fresh and flavorful, the pork belly was hands-down the best we've ever had, and the Yorkshire Pudding dessert was both exquisite and intriguingly mysterious. It was so impressive that our party of five made a point to personally thank the chef! We highly recommend this wonderful establishment and look forward to returning."

"The oldest pub in NZ is well worth a stop. The place is full of character and friendly staff.
Good selection of drinks - craft beer, NZ wines and non-alcoholic.
We also had dinner, great support for local producers. My wife and I shared the lamb shoulder - amazing. For dessert, highlight was the Yorkshire pudding."

"'The hell hole of the Pacific'
Booked in for dinner over the school holidays, had high hopes as the menu read well.
Started off with a great table over looking the harbour, sadly that was to be the highlight of the evening.
The food was ultimately disappointing,
Tempura mushroom arrived within seconds of ordering, resembling nothing of a fresh tempura batter, accompanied by an unidentifiable brown sauce.
After a long drive we were quite ravenous and attempted to indulge but struggled to eat the dish.
Hangi vegetables arrived with line caught fish of the day.
We couldn't eat the vegetable dish, unpalatable.
The fish seemed to be cooked ok, served in another brown sauce, I could not eat much of it , seemed under seaoned.
Although the outlook was beautiful, it was hard to sit and enjoy ourselves.
We decided to make the most of it and have a stroll around the promenade.
We voiced our concerns to out waiter, and he merely presented us with the bill.
2 stars are for the incredible location.
Very disappointed, I really expected better."
