"Single lane tunnel about 2km long and it's the only way going from Te Anau to Milford Sound. Traffic control using traffic light, so no need to worry about traffic from opposite side. Drive slow and be prepared to look for parking for the gorgeous landscape upon exiting the tunnel."

"While waiting you are in avalanche territory, a friendly kea parrot, the only alpine parrot in the world keeps me calm and happy.
At its highest point, the Milford Road is 940 metres (3,083 feet) above sea level.
It is regarded as one of the most scenic roads in New Zealand. It is an unforgettable journey into the heart of Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area.
Milford is one of the most dangerous public roads in New Zealand, with injury crash rates around 65% higher than the rest of New Zealand's network, and a fatality crash rate of almost twice average (per vehicle kilometre travelled), making it the third most dangerous section of New Zealand's State Highway network.
Snow can fall on higher parts of the road any time of the year. Snow, ice and risk of avalanches make safe driving critical. Avalanches are a winter hazard in the high mountains above the Milford Road and snow and ice effect the road surface.
The tunnel passes through the Darran mountain range, below the Homer Saddle, and into the Cleddau Valley, 945 metres above sea level.
Both the tunnel and saddle are named after William Henry Homer, who discovered the saddle along with George Barber in 1889 while on a surveying expedition. At the time, Homer is said to have suggested that a tunnel under the mountains would be the best way to bring a road to Milford Sound. However, it took many decades before his idea became reality."
