What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Children's Bay Walkway for its stunning ocean views and unique sculptures, calling it a 'purr-fect hike' with 'phenomenal views'. However, the trail's condition can be challenging, with overgrown sections and tide-dependent paths making parts difficult, especially for families with young children. Careful planning around tides and appropriate footwear are frequently recommended.
"I visited this track on a recommendation from the staff at the Akaroa i-SITE, and the whole walk took about two hours return.
Up to Moa Point, the path is really pleasant – the grass and plants are well maintained, so it’s an easy, comfortable walk. But once you pass Moa Point, it turns into a completely different story. The track is really overgrown, to the point where it’s hard to tell what’s actually the path and what’s just tall grass. From there it feels quite tough.
A bit further on, the route splits into a high-tide track and a low-tide track, so I strongly recommend checking the tide times before you go. When I was there it was high tide, so I couldn’t use the shoreline path and had to take a big detour, which made the whole loop about two hours. If it’s low tide, you can just follow the beach, which would make it shorter and more direct.
I wouldn’t really recommend doing the full loop with young children, especially the section after Moa Point and the parts that depend on the tide. It could be quite challenging for kids.
One more thing: the road leading to the Childrens Bay Walkway, called Childrens Bay Road, is very narrow. It basically only fits one car at a time. If two cars meet in the middle, there’s almost nowhere to pull over and pass, so keep that in mind when you drive in.
View is definitely amazing !"

"Created and shared by the Rolleston family. The full walk is not a ramble in flip flops. Recommend appropriate footwear. Easy to find and there are free leaflets with a map. A super 2-3 hr walk offering challenging routes with rewards of phenomenal views. (There is an easier route up to the Rhino) Lots of interest on route. Flora, fauna, birds, sculptures and views. Walk across the beach at low tide was rocky and slippery but offered a different perspective to conclude the walk.
Caution:could be dangerous in bad weather. Pay careful attention to slippy narrow paths next to considerable drops."

"A Purr-fect Hike with Stunning Views and Inspiring Art
This hike was the cat’s whiskers! The breathtaking views along the bay were paws-itively stunning—sparkling waters, rolling hills, and a fresh breeze that made every step feel rejuvenating. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to paws and soak in the scenery at every turn.
What truly sets this trail apart is the artistic touch. The sculptures and artwork scattered along the path were meow-gnificent! From scrap metal masterpieces to whimsical designs, each piece added a unique charm and personality to the hike. It felt like exploring an outdoor gallery, with nature as the backdrop.
The trail itself was well-maintained and just the right mix of challenge and leisure, making it paw-sible for hikers of all levels to enjoy. Whether you’re here for the views, the art, or just a chance to stretch your paws, this hike is an un-fur-gettable experience.
Highly recommend this trail for a day of adventure, inspiration, and pawsitive vibes. Five paws up! 🐾"

Navigating the Tides: Your Key to the Loop
If you're aiming for the full loop experience, planning your visit around low tide is essential. This allows you to enjoy the scenic beach walk and complete the circuit efficiently. If you miss the low tide window, be prepared for a considerably longer and potentially more strenuous walk.
Remember that the beach section itself can be rocky and slippery, even at low tide, so appropriate footwear is a must. Understanding the tidal patterns will dramatically enhance your enjoyment and ability to complete the intended route.
The Artful Trail: Sculptures and Scenery
The Rhino sculpture, a life-sized representation, is often cited as a highlight and a key destination for many visitors. Beyond the art, the walkway offers phenomenal views of the bay, with sparkling waters and rolling hills providing a stunning backdrop. The combination of artistic discovery and breathtaking scenery makes for a truly memorable and engaging experience.
Keep an eye out for local flora and fauna as well; visitors have noted the abundance of fantail birds, adding to the natural appeal of the trail. The blend of art, nature, and panoramic vistas is what makes this walkway a unique destination.
Trail Conditions and What to Expect
This overgrown nature, combined with narrow sections and potential drops, means that the trail is not recommended for very young children or those seeking an easy, leisurely stroll. Appropriate footwear, such as sturdy walking shoes, is strongly advised to navigate the terrain safely.
Furthermore, the trail can be dangerous in bad weather, with slippery surfaces and steep inclines. Visitors should exercise caution, especially after rain or during windy conditions. The private ownership of the land means the owners do a wonderful job maintaining the tracks free of charge, but natural elements can still impact conditions.
