#Sagarmatha Did you know Mt. Everest is also known by two other names — Sagarmatha and Jomolangma? Even I didn’t know until I visited the #SPCC – Sagarmatha Pollution Control Center. What’s so special about SPCC? SPCC was born out of the need to manage the waste generated by trekkers like us. The mountains were slowly turning into dustbins. To combat this, SPCC came up with a creative idea — th...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Fiordland National Park for its breathtaking, dramatic scenery and the abundance of wildlife. The staff at the Visitor Centre are noted for their helpfulness, though some find the booking confirmation stamping process a bit unusual. The park's natural beauty, from its fiords to its walking tracks, leaves a lasting impression, though sandflies can be a significant nuisance.

"Great spot with helpful staff.

We did the Routeburn and the Kepler with a night's rest in-between. After getting our first walk booking confirmation stamped, a staff member asked us to come back between walks to get the stamp for the next walk. I thought it was a bit strange to ask us to return again just to get a stamp, so we asked to get it there and then and it was fine. No dramas.

No hut in New Zealand has ever asked to see a stamped booking from us, so it seems a bit silly that we'd have to revisit the DOC centre, especially when the old legs are aching. The addition of getting a stamped booking confirmation while carrying a print out of an online booking confirmation seems a bit silly, especially if you arrived in town after the visitor centre closes. I can imagine some people could get worried in that situation. Perhaps a stamp isn't required and we were told incorrect info from our bus driver - apologies if that's the case.

That said, DOC are amazing and set the global standard for conservation and tramping. What a great set up with amazing people. Thank you for the unforgettable experiences. We are very grateful."

"Great experience, beautiful scenery. We took a scenic cruise with lunch picnic and visit to the underwater observatory. Nice choice of snacks, sandwiches and fruit, even cookies and chocolate. Observatory was educational. Interesting lectures by staff, would not have liked to miss that. Will sure be back with friends and family."

"Do visit the tourist centre to find out more information before you go for the hike.

Nice walking pathway to the first shelter. Took me 1.45hrs one way, a lot of sandflies so be prepared. Our target was to reach the first shelter and return after that."

Navigating Fiordland's Waterways

Fiordland National Park is defined by its magnificent fiords, Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound being the most famous. These glacial valleys, carved deep into the land, are now flooded by the Tasman Sea, creating dramatic waterways flanked by sheer cliffs and dense rainforest. The best way to experience them is via a scenic cruise. These tours range from short day trips to immersive overnight adventures, offering unparalleled views of cascading waterfalls, sheer rock faces, and the chance to spot marine life like seals and dolphins. TikTok+2

When choosing a cruise, consider the duration and type of experience you desire. Day cruises are perfect for a taste of the fiords, while overnight trips allow for a deeper immersion into the tranquility and darkness of the fiords, often including kayaking opportunities. The weather in Fiordland is famously wet, but this rain is precisely what feeds the hundreds of temporary waterfalls that adorn the cliffs, making the landscape even more spectacular. TikTok

For those seeking a more active engagement with the waterways, kayaking is an incredible option. Paddling through the calm waters, surrounded by towering peaks, offers a unique perspective and a chance to get up close with nature. Some tours offer guided kayaking excursions as part of their itinerary, providing a truly intimate encounter with this wild and beautiful environment. TikTok

Fiordland National Park is a hiker's paradise, home to some of New Zealand's most iconic multi-day treks, known as the Great Walks. The Routeburn Track and Kepler Track are prime examples, offering challenging yet rewarding journeys through diverse landscapes. These tracks traverse ancient beech forests, cross alpine passes with breathtaking panoramic views, and skirt the edges of pristine lakes and rivers. Reddit

Booking accommodation in the Department of Conservation (DOC) huts along these tracks is essential and must be done well in advance, often months ahead, especially for the peak summer season. Visitors are advised to visit the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau to confirm booking requirements and get the latest track conditions. Reddit Some hikers have noted the practice of getting booking confirmations stamped at the visitor centre, though its strict necessity on the trail can vary. Reddit

For day hikers, there are numerous shorter walks available, such as the scenic path to the first shelter on the Kepler Track, which takes about 1.5 hours one way. Be prepared for sandflies, which are prevalent in Fiordland, especially during warmer, humid conditions. Wearing long sleeves, long pants, and using a strong insect repellent is highly recommended to ensure a more comfortable hiking experience. Reddit
