What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Fiordland National Park for its breathtaking, dramatic scenery and the abundance of wildlife. The staff at the Visitor Centre are noted for their helpfulness, though some find the booking confirmation stamping process a bit unusual. The park's natural beauty, from its fiords to its walking tracks, leaves a lasting impression, though sandflies can be a significant nuisance.
"Great spot with helpful staff.
We did the Routeburn and the Kepler with a night's rest in-between. After getting our first walk booking confirmation stamped, a staff member asked us to come back between walks to get the stamp for the next walk. I thought it was a bit strange to ask us to return again just to get a stamp, so we asked to get it there and then and it was fine. No dramas.
No hut in New Zealand has ever asked to see a stamped booking from us, so it seems a bit silly that we'd have to revisit the DOC centre, especially when the old legs are aching. The addition of getting a stamped booking confirmation while carrying a print out of an online booking confirmation seems a bit silly, especially if you arrived in town after the visitor centre closes. I can imagine some people could get worried in that situation. Perhaps a stamp isn't required and we were told incorrect info from our bus driver - apologies if that's the case.
That said, DOC are amazing and set the global standard for conservation and tramping. What a great set up with amazing people. Thank you for the unforgettable experiences. We are very grateful."

"Great experience, beautiful scenery. We took a scenic cruise with lunch picnic and visit to the underwater observatory. Nice choice of snacks, sandwiches and fruit, even cookies and chocolate. Observatory was educational. Interesting lectures by staff, would not have liked to miss that. Will sure be back with friends and family."

"Do visit the tourist centre to find out more information before you go for the hike.
Nice walking pathway to the first shelter. Took me 1.45hrs one way, a lot of sandflies so be prepared. Our target was to reach the first shelter and return after that."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
While Fiordland is vast, reaching key points like Milford and Doubtful Sounds is possible via organized bus tours from Te Anau or Queenstown. Hitchhiking is also an option, though less predictable for reaching specific trailheads.
The most common method is by coach tour, which often includes stops at scenic viewpoints along the Milford Road. Driving yourself offers flexibility but requires careful planning due to road conditions and limited parking.
Yes, many visitors travel from Queenstown to Fiordland. This typically involves a scenic drive or a bus tour, with options for day trips or overnight stays in Te Anau before exploring the fiords.
Within the park itself, transport options are limited. For popular hikes, shuttle services might be available to specific track ends. For general exploration, consider joining a guided tour or driving.
The Milford Road is famously scenic but winding and can be challenging, especially in wet or icy conditions. It's crucial to drive cautiously, be aware of other traffic, and allow ample time for stops.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Entry to the national park itself is free. However, you'll need to book tickets for specific activities like Milford Sound cruises, Doubtful Sound overnight trips, and accommodation in the DOC (Department of Conservation) huts for multi-day hikes.
While park entry is free, Milford Sound cruises typically range from NZD $70-$150 per person, depending on the operator and duration. Bus transport from Te Anau or Queenstown will add to the cost.
The walking tracks within Fiordland National Park are generally free to access. However, if you plan to stay overnight in DOC huts on multi-day hikes like the Kepler or Routeburn Track, you must book and pay for hut accommodation in advance.
It's highly recommended to book Milford Sound cruises in advance, especially during peak season, as they can sell out. While some last-minute availability might exist, booking ahead guarantees your spot.
For multi-day hikes like the Kepler and Routeburn Tracks, some hikers report being asked to get their booking confirmations stamped at the Visitor Centre. While not always strictly enforced on the trail, it's a good practice to confirm requirements.

Iconic spots include the viewpoints along the Milford Road, the shores of Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound, and panoramic vistas from hiking trails. The dramatic weather often creates stunning photographic opportunities.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the grand scale of the fiords and landscapes. A telephoto lens can be useful for wildlife. Don't forget a sturdy tripod for low-light conditions and a waterproof camera bag.
Use a slower shutter speed to create a silky, flowing effect for waterfalls. Consider polarizing filters to reduce glare and enhance colors, especially on rainy days.
Drone usage is restricted in many national parks, including Fiordland, to protect wildlife and maintain the wilderness experience. Always check current regulations before flying.
Early mornings and late afternoons often offer the best light, with softer shadows and warmer tones. However, the dramatic, moody light during rain and mist can also produce spectacular, unique shots.
