What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Putangirua Pinnacles as a unique and otherworldly destination, especially for Lord of the Rings fans. The walks are generally considered worthwhile, offering stunning geological formations and great views, though the terrain can be challenging and tracks may be subject to closure.
"Putangirua Pinnacles is one of those “hidden gems” that doesn’t get mentioned much by locals, even though it’s only about an hour and a half from Wellington on the way to Cape Palliser Lighthouse. Most people discover it because of The Lord of the Rings — this New Zealand classic put it on the map, and many international visitors come specifically to see it.
It’s comparable to the Clay Cliffs in the South Island, but on a larger scale, with a deeper, more dramatic formation. There are two main walking routes:
One follows the riverbed into the valley, immersing you in the “mud forest.” This route is more challenging — at times you’ll need to use both hands and feet to climb. The riverbed is scattered with stones embedded with shell fossils, which makes it a neat spot to get a feel for New Zealand’s geological history.
The other route climbs along the hillside, giving you a higher vantage point to admire the pinnacles from above. This path is easier and more suitable for a casual stroll, no special hiking gear needed. Each trail offers a different perspective of the landscape.
There’s a large flat area at the valley entrance that serves as parking and a small camping base, with toilets, BBQ facilities, and water.
It can get very busy in summer, and parking may be limited if you arrive spontaneously. It’s best to visit on a fine day — after rain, the riverbed can have strong currents or even mudslides, which can be dangerous.
If you enjoy dramatic natural scenery and a bit of film history, Putangirua Pinnacles is definitely worth the stop."

"It is a cool spot that is being slowly weathered away so I am glad I went, I didn't go off the main path to the better lookout spot but I imagine it is a bit better there. The walk up has a fair amount of elevation and stairs. Had some cool shells."

"STAY IN THE STREAM BED, not the trail, if you want to walk among the pinnacles.
The trail to the lookout is also nice, but is probably not what you drove all this way to see.
Walk the stream bed. It's difficult walking, so the 1.5-km hike could easily take 45 minutes to get to the pinnacles, but it's worth it and it's amazing."

🎫 🚶 Onsite Experience
There are two main tracks: the riverbed track (easier, flatter, about 30-45 minutes one way) and the lookout track (more challenging, involves elevation gain, about 45 minutes one way). The riverbed track leads directly to the base of the pinnacles, while the lookout offers a higher vantage point.
The riverbed walk to the pinnacles typically takes 30-45 minutes one way, while the lookout track takes around 45 minutes one way. Allow 1.5-2 hours for a round trip, including time to explore.
The riverbed walk is moderately difficult due to the stony and uneven terrain. The lookout track is more strenuous due to the elevation gain. Sturdy footwear is essential.
While the pinnacles themselves were used as a filming location, the specific 'Army of the Dead' scene might not be clearly identifiable or accessible due to track conditions or the nature of the landscape. The overall atmosphere is what evokes Middle-earth.
