Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Holberg Statue as a central landmark and a nod to Bergen's literary heritage. Its convenient location by the fish market and harbor makes it an easily accessible point of interest for photos and a brief cultural stop. Some enjoy the local lore surrounding the statue, adding a touch of humor to the visit.

"Ludvig Holberg is the father of modern Scandinavian literature. Best known abroad as a writer of comedies, he was also a master in various other fields. He served, for example, as professor of history at the University of Copenhagen and wrote several historical works. Some of his works—including his autobiography—he wrote in Latin; most, however, were written in Danish, the language of Denmark and Norway."

"Cool dude standing guard over Bergen harbor."

Sarah Hartman

"Centrally located and right at the fish market. Don't know if it's true but our local guide told us that Holberg was born in Bergen but left as a child and only came back once at the age of 15. At some point he wrote that Bergen was the dirtiest, smelliest and most disgusting place that he had ever been, so the people of Bergen put up a statue of him so that he would be here forever. They also enjoy when the seagulls poop on his head. Again, don't know if it's completely true or not, but it's a fun story."
