In April 2014, two Dutch students, Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon, set out to explore Panama's El Pianista trail - a scenic hike that promised adventure and beauty. But what started as a peaceful journey turned into one of the most haunting missing person cases in recent history. When the women failed to return, search teams scoured the dense jungle for days, finding nothing but silence. Weeks lat...

In April 2014, Dutch tourists Kris Kremers, 21, and Lisanne Froon, 22, vanished while hiking the El Pianista Trail in Boquete, Panama. They had been staying with a host family, excited to explore, and left for what should have been a short hike. Ten weeks later, their belongings were found miles deep in the jungle—Lisanne’s backpack neatly placed on a riverbank. Inside were two pairs of sunglasse...

Reviews Summary

The El Pianista Trail is praised for its beautiful cloud forest scenery and rewarding views from the Mirador, especially when visited early. However, hikers consistently highlight the trail's poor marking and the potential for getting lost, emphasizing the need for offline maps or a guide. Some reviews also touch upon the trail's association with a past tragic event, though many find it a safe and enjoyable hike with proper preparation.

"An easily accessible, moderate effort hike, likely best done in the morning to reach the viewpoint by 10am before the mist and clouds obscure the view. Double-track road (mostly open terrain) for 1.3m then single track in the forest the rest of the way. Green rain/cloud forest, gentle stream, and bird song provide most of the atmosphere.
There are no sign posts or blazes; research the route ahead of time, use map apps (download offline in advance since cell signal is often not present). See my photos for track and 2 key decision points (thanks to Quinten Smit reviewer of the Mirador).
The families and dogs along the way (early on) seem to be minding their own simple business. The no trespassing and for sale signs midway are for the property on the sides of the trail - the trail is fully accessible; you are not trespassing.
So many reviews here and for the ending viewpoint ("Mirador") are seemingly based in grief, anger, speculation, fiction, and the resulting fear that persists to the current day. My sense is that this is a perfectly safe hike to be done solo and/or independently. Set up a safety check with a friend if you want a safety net.
Jorge may be studying and selling his woven bracelets about midway. Enjoy!"

Ron Edwards

"A difficult hike in wet weather, but beautiful and rewarding. Thank you to the previous reviewer Ron who uploaded 2 photos showing which way to go. It’s not always obvious, and without these and a downloaded Wikiloc trail, I could have gone wrong on a few occasions."

Balor Knight

"The idea was to go to the Mirador, it was a n easy trail and long as you don't get lost in the intersection. It was an ok walk even after some rain, we couldn't enjoy the view much it was very cloudy, but it was a good exercise"

Navigating the El Pianista Trail

The El Pianista Trail is renowned for its natural beauty but also for its challenging navigation. Unlike many well-maintained trails, El Pianista is often described as having poorly marked junctions and a lack of clear signage. This can lead to confusion, especially for those unfamiliar with the area or hiking without a guide. Many reviews emphasize the importance of downloading offline maps from apps like Wikiloc or Maps.me before setting out, as cell service is frequently unavailable along the route. Reddit

Previous hikers have shared crucial advice about key decision points where the trail can fork unexpectedly. Paying close attention to downloaded maps and looking for subtle trail markers or worn paths is essential. For those seeking extra assurance, hiring a local guide is a popular option. Guides like Feliciano are frequently mentioned for their experience, kindness, and ability to navigate the trail safely, ensuring hikers reach their intended destinations without getting lost. Reddit
