Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking natural beauty of Quebrada Akilpo and the Cordillera Blanca, highlighting the stunning glacial lakes and majestic mountain scenery. Tour operators like Akilpo receive accolades for their professionalism, organization, and the kindness of their staff, though some experiences with guides have varied. "We went to Huaraz in order to do the Santa Cruz Trek. As we were not too experienced in doing hikes on this altitude and over several days- we found the perfect tour operator with Akilpo.
Akilpo did a super detailed introduction with us into the characteristics of the trek and how we can prepare us in the best way to get used to the high altitude of the Cordillera Blanca. The Trek was super well organized and professional with a donkey driver, a cook and Luis, our guide. Luis guided us very well over the four days even if we had though weather conditions.
The whole team of Akilpo is very obliging, kind and accommodating- you can really feel that they love their jobs.
Apart from that, we stayed three nights in Akilpo Home and also had a great experience: super clean and well equipped rooms and the breakfast was also very delicious.
All in all, the slightly higher price compared to other tour operators in Huaraz, is definitely worth it and we would always do it again with Akilpo.
So thank you very much to the whole Akilpo Team for the pleasant experience and hospitality."

"If you’re heading to Huaraz, stop searching — this is the place to be to stay or for a tour. The rooms are super clean, the beds incredibly comfy, and the breakfast hits the spot every morning. Their tours are well-organized and run by real profs. But what really makes Akilpo special is the team: they’re unbelievably kind and supportive. After an accident, they went above and beyond to help me — true heroes. I felt completely at home and in the best hands. Can’t wait to come back next time I’m in Huaraz!
Btw the Lagoon 69 Panoramic was one of the best tours that I did!"

Trekking in the Cordillera Blanca
When planning a trek, altitude acclimatization is paramount. Spending a few days in Huaraz (around 3050m) before embarking on any high-altitude activity is crucial to prevent altitude sickness. This involves staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity on your first day, and potentially consuming coca tea. Many visitors find that operators like Akilpo provide excellent guidance on acclimatization and trek preparation, making the experience more enjoyable and safer.
Essential packing includes layers of clothing suitable for rapidly changing mountain weather, sturdy waterproof hiking boots, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen), and a reliable water source. Trekking poles are highly recommended for stability and reducing strain on your knees, especially on descents.
Choosing a Tour Operator
Reviews suggest that while some operators might be slightly more expensive, the quality of service, safety, and overall experience can be significantly higher. Luis, a guide mentioned in several reviews, seems to be a popular figure, known for creating a good atmosphere and guiding trekkers effectively, though one review noted a need for more experience. When choosing an operator, consider their reputation, the details of their itinerary, what is included in the price, and the qualifications of their guides.
Beyond trekking, some operators also offer accommodation. Akilpo Home is noted for its clean rooms, comfortable beds, and delicious breakfast, making it a convenient base before or after a trek. This integrated approach to accommodation and tours can simplify travel planning for those visiting Huaraz.
