Reviews Summary
Travelers consistently praise the incredible wildlife encounters and the deep knowledge of local guides, making jungle treks and river excursions truly memorable. While accommodations can be basic, the overall experience of immersing in the Amazon's natural beauty is highly recommended. Some find the food good but suggest bringing snacks, and appreciate the well-planned activities.
"We took a 4-day, 3-night trip to stay at a lodge.
Our guide was Manolo and he was amazing, he has a lot of knowledge and shares it in an excellent, interesting, and funny way.
We also received very personal service and he had an answer to every question..! We truly enjoyed the trip and felt that we experienced the jungle as it really is.
Highly recommended..!
The food was very good and we even rescued an eagle and catch piranha and other fish’s 😬
Thank you very much 🙏🏻"

"We did an overnight tour and it was amazing! We visited Monkey Island, went piranha fishing, tried our hand with blow dart guns, saw river dolphins, and went swimming in the Amazon River. We really enjoyed the knowledge of the guides.
The lodge owner (not owned by the Amazon Experience company) was eccentric and generally grumpy, but it was a tiny inconvenience compared to the overall experience.
I LOVE nature walks and did a few on my own, but having guides' insight and observations greatly enhanced the experience - thank you for making this a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime experience!
This was a really great option for the short time we had in Iquitos - also an incredible city reminding me a bit of New Orleans, LA, but faster paced."

"Samuel was a great guide. Very passionate and keen to accomodate activities we wanted to do.
The accomodation was basic but as expected. Food was good, but I recommend bringing some snacks in case you get hungry between meals. Meals were served at 8am, 1pm and 7pm and always on time.
I recommend bringing a book or cards/something to do as there does end up being a fair bit of relaxation time between activities."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Most journeys to the Amazon River begin in gateway cities like Iquitos, Peru, or Manaus, Brazil. From these cities, you'll typically take a boat or smaller plane to reach your lodge or cruise departure point. Flights to Iquitos are common from Lima, Peru.
Travel on the Amazon River is primarily by boat. Options range from large cruise ships offering luxury experiences to smaller riverboats and speedboats for lodge transfers and day tours.
There are no direct flights to the Amazon River itself. You'll need to fly into a major city like Iquitos or Manaus and then arrange onward travel by boat or smaller aircraft.
The most popular entry points for Amazon River tours are Iquitos in Peru and Manaus in Brazil. Both cities offer access to different regions of the vast Amazon basin.
While possible, independent travel can be challenging due to the vastness and remoteness. Most visitors opt for organized tours or cruises for safety and convenience.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
You don't need a general 'ticket' for the Amazon River itself, but you will need to book tours, lodge stays, or cruises, which include access and activities.
Costs vary widely depending on the duration, type of accommodation (lodge vs. cruise), and luxury level. Expect prices to range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per person.
Some protected areas within the Amazon basin may have entrance fees. These are usually included in organized tour packages.
While some last-minute bookings might be possible in gateway cities, it's highly recommended to book Amazon tours and lodges in advance, especially during peak seasons.
Packages usually include accommodation, meals, guided excursions (like jungle walks, piranha fishing, wildlife spotting), and sometimes transfers from the gateway city.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
You can see a huge variety of wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, river dolphins, caimans, capybaras, and countless bird species. Giant anacondas are also a possibility, though sightings are rare and often sensationalized.
Yes, the Amazon is home to wildlife like piranhas, caimans, and anacondas. However, encounters are usually managed safely by guides, and attacks on humans are rare.
Activities often include jungle trekking, night walks, piranha fishing, visiting local communities, bird watching, and searching for river dolphins.
Swimming is generally safe in designated areas away from strong currents and known wildlife habitats, often recommended by guides.
The 'boiling river' is a geothermal phenomenon where underground hot springs heat the river water to near-boiling temperatures, creating a unique ecosystem. It's a specific, less common destination within the Amazon.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
Expect a mix of local Amazonian cuisine featuring fresh fish, tropical fruits, and regional specialties, often prepared with international influences on cruises.
Most lodges and cruise operators can accommodate dietary restrictions if notified in advance. It's best to confirm when booking.
Absolutely! Trying dishes like 'juane' (rice and chicken wrapped in bijao leaves) or grilled 'paiche' (a large Amazonian fish) is a highlight.
It's generally advisable to stick to reputable restaurants and avoid street food in gateway cities to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses.
Yes, bringing some of your favorite snacks is a good idea, especially if you have specific preferences or get hungry between meals, as options might be limited.
📸 📸 Photography
The Amazon offers incredible photography opportunities, from diverse wildlife and lush rainforest landscapes to vibrant sunsets and local communities.
A versatile zoom lens for wildlife, a wide-angle lens for landscapes, and a durable camera body are recommended. A waterproof bag is crucial.
While anacondas are present, sightings are rare and often sensationalized in videos. If you do see one, maintain a safe distance and respect its space.
Lighting can be challenging due to dense canopy cover, creating low-light conditions. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best natural light.
Generally, photography is allowed, but always be respectful of local communities and wildlife. Avoid using flash directly on animals, as it can disturb them.
