Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Freedom Island for its proximity to nature within the city and its importance as a bird sanctuary. However, many note the significant issue of trash accumulation, emphasizing the need for ongoing clean-up efforts and better waste management. The experience is often enhanced by participating in organized clean-up drives, which provide access and a sense of purpose. Reddit

"The Las Pinas - Paranaque Wetland Park is accessible near the Cavitex Easytrip ticketing office.

You need prior permits and email to the DENR to access the protected landscapes, where you can view the birds, maybe storks in the coastal areas, including mangroves.

The guard-on-duty, however, is not duly-informed and can not give me complete details on where to obtain the visitor's information form and email the same to the DENR office for approval.

As of June 28, 2025, I was able to access the island by participating with the clean-up drive with CORA. There were swamps in the island, but the main objective there is the cleanup drive in partnership with the LGU of Paranaque.

Note that sensitive stomach may not join the cleanup drive. As you may know, the riverbank was dirty and full of debris."

"You feel so close to nature in the midst of the city.i hope more people can visit this place for more time close to nature..

Soooo much more trash to clean! This is my 3rd time here, but there is always trash to clean.

The staff and crew are really friendly and kind. You can organize clean up drives here to help save the environment."

Everyday is a Wonder

"Good place to watch birds or do a CSR activity. Hope more volunteers, individual or organizations will consider this place."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Importance of Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park

Freedom Island is a crucial part of the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP), a vital ecological zone within Metro Manila. This area serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds, providing them with essential feeding and resting grounds during their long journeys. The park's mangrove forests are not only biodiverse habitats but also act as natural buffers against storm surges and coastal erosion, protecting nearby communities. Reddit

The LPPWP, including Freedom Island, is a testament to the possibility of preserving nature amidst urban development. However, it faces significant challenges, primarily from pollution and waste management. The recurring presence of trash highlights the need for continuous conservation efforts and public awareness. Reddit

Efforts to protect and restore Freedom Island often involve community-driven initiatives, such as clean-up drives organized by groups like CORA. These activities not only help in environmental restoration but also foster a sense of stewardship among participants, encouraging a deeper connection with nature and a commitment to its preservation. Reddit

Navigating Access and Permits

Visiting Freedom Island requires a bit of planning, as it's a protected area. The primary gateway is through the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP). To ensure a smooth visit, it's highly recommended to secure prior permits from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This often involves an email application process, and it's wise to start this well in advance of your intended visit. Reddit

For those who find the permit process daunting or wish for a guaranteed entry, participating in organized clean-up drives is a popular and effective alternative. Organizations like CORA frequently host these events, partnering with local government units. These drives not only contribute to the island's conservation but also provide a structured way to experience the area and understand its environmental challenges firsthand. Reddit

While general access might seem restricted, the local guards are present, though their information on visitor protocols can sometimes be inconsistent. Therefore, having confirmed arrangements through DENR or an organized group is the most reliable way to explore Freedom Island and appreciate its natural beauty responsibly. Reddit
