"Perched on a hill above the town of Santa Maria with 360 degree views to the sea and surrounding countryside, the Spanish picked a special spot to build this church. You can climb the wide staircase or drive up to the basilica, where there is plenty of parking.

This is a UNESCO site, the large ancient building and beautiful interior, along with its unusual bell tower makes the stopover worthwhile.

Apart from a plaque there is very little on how the church was built or its history since then."
