What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally praise the Moliceiro boat ride as a charming and essential Aveiro experience, often comparing it to Venice. Many enjoyed the colorful boats and the unique perspective of the city's architecture. However, some reviews noted inconsistent guide quality and limited sights from the water, suggesting that walking might offer a comparable experience for some.
"Love this place. Too bad we had only an hour stop here.
My sister and I got to ride the gondola over the bridges and the canal. It was an awesome experience. The tour guide served us wine and a delicacy in Aveiro. They call this place Little Venice. There's so much to see here. Great murals to see everywhere. There's construction going on during our visit here, but we enjoyed the other views."

"The tour started and our guide was sitting down. When I asked if this is a guided tour. She told me to calm down and take pictures. In 45 min all she told us are 3 things. This is where we store the salt but this year not so much salt, Here is the ceramic building. But it’s closed and the friendship bridge but there 5 but one is the friendship bridge. Bad tour. Watch for the ones that have microphones. They don’t stop talking. Oh and all she did is show the middle figure to other boats."

"We went on board with Viva Ria on their boat pier to cruise in the Aveiro city cannels. The boat ride was approximately 40 minutes. Cost per person was 15 Euros. The staff were friendly and explained the historical importance of each building and places we observed during the boat cruise. Good boat agency. Boat ride was also comfortable. Highly recommended."

The History and Significance of Moliceiro Boats
Today, the Moliceiro boats have been repurposed for touristic rides, offering visitors a unique way to explore the city's intricate network of canals. While the original purpose has faded, the boats themselves remain a powerful symbol of Aveiro, often referred to as the 'Venice of Portugal' due to its waterways. Riding in one provides a charming and leisurely perspective of the city's Art Nouveau architecture and waterfront life.
When choosing a tour, some operators offer more detailed historical commentary than others. Travelers have noted varying levels of engagement from guides, so if historical context is important to you, consider looking for tours that are specifically recommended for their informative nature.
Navigating Aveiro's Canals: What to Expect
As you glide along, you'll pass by buildings showcasing Art Nouveau architecture, characterized by ornate facades and decorative elements. The historic salt pans are also a significant feature of the Ria de Aveiro landscape, a reminder of the region's long-standing salt production industry. Some tours might venture slightly further afield, offering glimpses of the traditional houses and the unique ecosystem of the lagoon.
While the boat ride offers a fantastic overview, many visitors recommend also exploring Aveiro on foot. This allows for a more intimate experience, enabling you to discover hidden alleys, local shops, and smaller canals not accessible by the larger Moliceiro boats. The construction work mentioned by some visitors can occasionally affect views, but the overall charm of Aveiro usually shines through.
Choosing the Right Moliceiro Tour Operator
When selecting a tour, consider what you're looking for. Standard tours are great for a general overview and are budget-friendly. However, if you prefer a more personalized experience, private tours are available and can be tailored to your interests, potentially offering more in-depth information or a longer duration.
Traveler feedback suggests that the quality of the guide's commentary can vary. Some guides are highly informative and engaging, while others might offer minimal information. If detailed historical insights are a priority, it might be worth researching specific operators or asking locals for recommendations.
