Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Palácio dos Duques de Bragança for its free admission and historical significance, particularly its connection to the Galo de Barcelos legend. The scenic river views and accessible paths are also highlighted as positives. However, the lack of restrooms and the short duration of the visit are noted drawbacks.

"Palácio dos Duques de Bragança

Type: palace, ruins, museum
Time spent: 10-15 min
Price: free
Parking: available (Câmara municipal)
Path for disabled: available
WC: not available
Built in 15th century.

The palace was the richest building in Barcelos, but was damaged by the earthquake in 1755. In the 19 century the city took a decision to demolish the ruin, but it was not realised. Currently it's an open air museum."

"A free open air attraction between the main church and the river. Good views and historical associations with the 'Lenda do Galo' which is explained in two slightly different versions, one at the entrance and another inside."

"Small, exposed to the elements with an attendant. We arrived at closing and we just walked past him without realizing he was about to lock up. He allowed us to walk around for about 10 mins (its small enough to do it in that time). We have such a terrific impression of the people of Portugal and especially in small town Barcelos. So many times the locals would approach us helping us (we looked lost finding our hotel and sites a few times)"
