Reviews Summary

Ponta da Ferraria is lauded as a unique and magical natural thermal pool in the ocean, offering a truly unforgettable experience. Visitors appreciate the free access and the dramatic coastal scenery. However, some find the rocky entry challenging and the facilities basic, with cleanliness being a recurring concern.

"Great coast line view, with plenty of walks. The highlight of course is the natural thermal bath in the ocean, open to the public for free. This in our opinion was the nicest of the all the thermal bath experiences on the island… a must visit!

Plenty of free parking, and if you arrive a little later in the morning there’s a van serving food and drinks. The key however is to arrive pretty early if you can, we got here between 9 and 9:30 and it was great but 30-45 minutes later it was very busy!"

Georgia Morgan

"Very nice pools heated by thermal sources. We went mid-tides and had the perfect mix of warm and cool water. Big free car park next to the (currently closed) Spa. Then 5 minutes walk down to the rock pools."

Raoul Dittrich

"Incredible swimming hole that is naturally thermally heated, with cooler ocean water being swept in by waves. We came at low tide which is probably best. No entry fee. There’s a fairly large parking lot at the bottom of the hill. There are public toilets and changing rooms although not sufficient for the demand."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Thermal Waters

Ponta da Ferraria is a remarkable natural phenomenon where volcanic activity heats the ocean water. A geothermal spring located underwater releases heat, creating a natural thermal pool. This heat is most noticeable during low tide when the incoming ocean water is less dominant, allowing the warmer water to concentrate near the rocks. The temperature can vary significantly, from pleasantly warm to quite hot, depending on the tide and the specific spot you choose. It's a unique geological feature that makes São Miguel a hotspot for geothermal wonders. TikTok

Visitors often describe the sensation as a natural spa, with the cooler Atlantic waves mixing with the volcanic warmth. This creates a dynamic and invigorating bathing experience. The surrounding volcanic rocks, formed from ancient lava flows, add to the dramatic and raw beauty of the location. It's a powerful reminder of the island's volcanic origins and the forces shaping its landscape. Reddit

Navigating the Terrain and Safety

Accessing the thermal pool at Ponta da Ferraria involves a short but steep walk down a path from the parking area. The final approach to the water is over a rocky, uneven surface. Many visitors strongly recommend wearing water shoes to protect your feet from sharp rocks and to improve grip on slippery surfaces. Reddit

Once in the water, be aware of the strong currents and waves, especially if you are not an experienced swimmer. A rope is often present to help swimmers stabilize themselves. Lifeguards are typically on duty during peak seasons, but it's crucial to assess the conditions yourself before entering. The rocks can be very slippery, and a fall could lead to injury. Patience and careful movement are key to a safe and enjoyable visit. Reddit
