What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Rocha da Relva Trail's stunning coastal views and peaceful, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere. While the steep return climb is a challenge, most agree the breathtaking scenery and unique experience are well worth the effort. Some found the on-trail cafe pricey, but the natural beauty and tranquility are consistently praised.
"I could hike this trail every day. What an incredible coastal trail with fantastic views and diverse terrain. We hiked it late in the day, and we saw maybe three people along the entire route. It's an absolutely idyllic part of the island. The feeling of walking here on an island in the middle of the ocean, where all you can hear is your own breathing and the sound of the waves, is incredible. Here's to more places like this in the future!"

"A really lovely walk ‘off the beaten path’ so quiet and gets you down to the ocean. Heading out is mostly downhill but coming back is therefore all uphill and steep so not for those who aren’t in good shape. Strongly suggest you go to the little bar on the ocean as a treat for your hike about 2km in. A peaceful and lovely view for a glass of wine or beer or coffee on the sea and very friendly owner."

"Beautiful trail. Down and back. And the back will make you rethink your decision 😂 But totally worth it. I Bolted there but no cars available on my way out, luckily found a nice hiker that gave me a ride back to town."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Key recommendations for families include: ensuring children wear sturdy, non-slip shoes; packing plenty of snacks and water, as facilities are limited; and considering a late afternoon visit when the crowds are thinner and the light is softer. The opportunity to see the ocean waves and potentially some local cats can be exciting for younger adventurers. However, if your children are very young or have difficulty with steep terrain, this trail might be too challenging.
🚶 Budget Travelers
Tips for saving money: Pack your own lunch and snacks to avoid the potentially higher prices at the trail's cafe. If you're renting a car, compare prices from different companies. Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) for potentially lower accommodation and car rental rates.

The Rocha da Relva Trail Experience
For those seeking a longer adventure, the trail extends into a more extensive coastal path, once used by locals. This longer route provides a deeper immersion into the natural beauty of the area, with lush green landscapes and the constant sound of the waves. However, it requires more time and a good level of fitness. The Fonte da Rocha, a natural freshwater spring, is a unique feature along the way, offering a moment of respite and a connection to the island's volcanic origins.
Practical advice from hikers emphasizes the importance of sturdy footwear due to the steep and potentially slippery terrain, especially after rain. While there's a cafe about 2km in, some find its prices high, so bringing your own water and snacks is a good idea. Visiting in the late afternoon is often recommended for the beautiful golden hour light and fewer fellow hikers, making for a truly peaceful experience.
Navigating the Terrain and Safety
While the shorter route to the ocean is manageable for many, the extended coastal path demands more endurance. It's important to assess your fitness level before embarking on the longer sections. Carrying sufficient water is essential, as there are limited facilities along the trail. The remote nature of the trail means that help might not be immediately accessible in case of an emergency, so being prepared and aware of your surroundings is paramount.
For those who might not have a car, getting back to your starting point after the hike can be a consideration. While some have found rides from other hikers, it's not a reliable method. Planning your transportation in advance, especially if you're not driving, is key to a smooth experience.
