Reviews Summary

Visitors find Lousã Castle to be a small but picturesque ruin with stunning natural surroundings. The hike via the PR1 trail is highly praised for its scenic beauty, leading to the castle and charming schist villages like Talasnal. However, frequent road closures and limited castle access can be a point of frustration.

"Take trail PR1 from Lousã and hike up to the castle. It is a lovely hike along the water canal that supplies the local paper mill with water. At sunset the light is just the ticket to take in the surrounding hills."

"This is a small very small castle, but very picturesque. The view from the top is lovely, if you are lucky enough to visit on a day it's open. Best to visit on a weekend if you would like to climb the tower. It's located on a nice hiking trail that is challenging, but you can follow it right up to Talasnal and Casal Novo. There is also a pretty river beach, a waterfall, and highly rated restaurant very close by."

"Castelo da Lousã

Type: castle
Price: free
Time spent: 15-20 min
Parking: available
Bike parking: not available
Path for disabled: not available
WC: close to the santuário

(!) Current situation:
The road (M580) to the castle is closed as well as the castle, so you cannot get inside.

(!)The other road (National 236) takes you to the viewpoint of the castle, but you cannot enter from that side. The only way is to walk via (!) path (Trilho PR1 Lousa).
Date: 31/05/2025

The castle was built in the 11th century with the purpose of protecting Coimbra. Now it seems to be far away from civilization (the closest city is Lousa - 3 km) but during the medieval times it was a strategic point (Arouce city, the river, the old Roman city - Lousa, etc.). During the 18th century the castle was particularly ruined by vandalism of those, who searched for the legendary Arouce treasures. The treasure was never found, so we still have a chance?

But the real treasure is nature close to the castle, the river beach, mountains, walking trails, the sanctuary etc."
