What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Gruta das Torres for its authentic, unlit lava tube experience and the passion of its guides. While some have encountered temporary closures due to safety, the opportunity to explore unique geological formations with personal lighting is highly praised. It's a must-visit for those seeking a natural wonder on Pico Island.
"A great place to visit the volcanic wonders of the world and how life finds a way under extreme circumstances. Unfortunately, when I was there, the lava cave itself had to be closed because there had emerged some cracks at the entrance. Nevertheless, we could watch from above and had a really good guide to tell us the whole story. And we could watch a movie at the beginning. A place to see when visiting Pico island."

"Fantastic place. My favourite of the two lava tube tours as it's much less developed (no lights or paved ways underground). Note though that it's only accessible by guided tours, which are at specific times of the day and of limited numbers (around 15 people each) so it's important to book in advance. An amazing experience led by knowledgeable guides who can describe the process and lava types in to be found (as well as pointing out the low ceilings, trip hazard and slippery bits :)). Fantastic formations and colours. Just having torchlight makes it more atmospheric. Highly recommended."

"How to find the caves:
There are 3 caves, 2 small, 1 huge.
For the two small ones you dont need a headlamp, you will be okay with mobile lamp. They are pretty easy and safe.
The huge one is around 150m long with lot of curves. You really need a good headlamp as there is no light from outside.
Also wear a proper shoes.
They are all incredible!"
