What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pico da Vara offers a rewarding hike through a unique laurel forest, with the summit providing potentially spectacular views. However, the trail can be very muddy and slippery, and frequent fog often obscures the summit vistas, leading to mixed experiences for visitors.
"Even though we ended up in a fog at the summit and had no view, the hike was still good and enjoyable.
I would recommend sturdy footwear to everyone, as it can get quite slippery in places. Also, relatively early in the hike, hikers often leave their walking sticks behind on the way back, which are worth picking up."

"This is a nice walk. It took us aproximetly one hour to get there. The trail is in woods, nothing special. But I consider it like good little exercise."

"The trail is not difficult from a technical standpoint but its steep for sure. The path itself is not really special. On the way up there are about two points which provide a nice view the rest is mostly in the Forrest. The view on top of Pico da Vara must be spectacular, I can't say because when we went up the weather was bad. I would not do this hike if the weather is bad, because as noted the trail itself is nothing spectacular."

Navigating the Pico da Vara Trail
The trail winds through a significant portion of the native laurel forest, which is a unique ecological treasure. This dense forest provides a cool, shaded environment for much of the hike. However, the scenic points are primarily concentrated near the summit. The trail maintenance status can vary, so be prepared for potentially muddy sections and uneven terrain.
At the summit, you'll find a boardwalk that offers a distinct experience and leads to the very top. This elevated path helps protect the delicate vegetation while providing a clear route. The reward for the challenging ascent is the potential for spectacular panoramic views across São Miguel and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean, provided the weather is clear.
Weather and Views: A Crucial Combination
Therefore, checking the weather forecast before embarking on the hike is crucial. Opting for a day with clear skies significantly enhances the experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the 360-degree vistas of the island. Early morning hikes often offer a better chance of clearer conditions compared to later in the day when clouds tend to build up.
If the weather is poor, the hike itself, while a good form of exercise, is primarily through dense forest with limited visual interest until the very top. For this reason, many advise against attempting the hike if the weather is not favorable, to avoid disappointment.
