São Jorge Castle, o...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Sesimbra Castle for its breathtaking panoramic views and well-preserved medieval architecture. The historical atmosphere and the opportunity to explore the ramparts are major highlights. Some find the access a bit challenging, and the facilities within the castle are basic, but the overall experience is highly rewarding.

"A wonderful spot for an evening walk and to catch the sunset after supper! You can hike up from one side and down the other, and at the top wander along the old stone walls. If you prefer, you can also drive up. Many people come here to enjoy a drink with friends.

On the way to the castle (perched on a low mountain), just before the uphill climb there’s a public picnic park on the left. It has a BBQ area, a washroom (locked after hours), a water fountain, and plenty of space to sit and relax. I even noticed an RV parked nearby — seems like
some people choose to rest there before moving on.

The paths and roads are stone, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. ( No ticket is needed. )"

"About a 40-45 minute hike from the Beachfront hotels. Pretty steep and a full on workout if you decide to hike. Recommended doing in the morning before it gets hot out. Amazing views once you are inside the castle & near the castle walls and triangular shape lookout points. The church was also beautiful inside. Also easy to drive there and park for free."

Paul Sereno

"I highly recommend visiting the ruins of this castle if you’re in Sesimbra or nearby and have even a slight interest in medieval history. The castle is quite ruined, and part of the area is a classic—and no less interesting—cemetery, but the walls, the bastion, and almost the entire citadel are still standing. There’s a beautiful view of the harbor and a strong feeling that a medieval knight once stood guard here, asking, “Who goes there?” There’s a lovely church with azulejo paintings and few visitors. From Sesimbra, it’s a nice walk uphill if you enjoy hiking, wild trails, and are physically fit. If not, it’s better to get there by car."
