What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Cruz Alta for its breathtaking panoramic views, especially of Pena Palace, and the historical significance of the cross itself. The accessible hike is a major plus, though some note the Google Maps location can be imprecise and the final ascent is rocky. It's a highly recommended spot for photography and soaking in the Sintra landscape.
"One of the attractions within Pena Park is the High Cross and viewpoint (Miradouro da Cruz Alta) situated at 528 metres above sea level. There is a walking path leading through the park to the north of Pena Palace that leads to an outcrop of boulders for which a Manueline patterned cross stands. From here there are very good views of the surrounding area as well.
According to information panel near Cruz Alta, the first cross was constructed and placed here in 1522 by order of King Joao III. King Ferdinand II installed a new cross with a Manueline style cross, like the one you see today. This was eventually destroyed by lighting strike in 1997 and replaced by a replica by the Parques de Sintra in 2008."

"Great viewpoint where you can see the Palacio. The way is pathed until the last few steps up to the cross - but nothing too hard or too dangerous. On a sunny day you can see the coastline."

"This location on Google Maps is wrong. The real cruz alta is further east and has more reviews."
