Reviews Summary

Pena Palace is widely praised for its stunning, colorful architecture and beautiful parkland, offering breathtaking views. However, many visitors find the experience can be marred by overwhelming crowds and long queues, especially if not visiting early or booking tickets in advance. Some suggest the interior can feel rushed and overcrowded, with the exterior and gardens being the main draw for many.

"The National Palace of Pena is one of the most breathtaking landmarks I have ever visited. Perched high above Sintra, it feels like stepping into a fairytale. The architecture is a vibrant mix of romanticism and fantasy – every corner surprises you with bold colors, intricate details, and panoramic views that leave you speechless. 🌄✨

🌸 The gardens surrounding the palace are equally enchanting, full of hidden pathways, exotic plants, and serene spots perfect for photos or quiet reflection.

🎟️ Tips:
• Arrive early in the morning to avoid the heavy crowds.
• Wear comfortable shoes – lots of walking and steps.
• Definitely buy tickets in advance online, it saves time at the entrance.

📸 For photographers and history lovers, this place is pure magic. The view over Sintra and Lisbon on a clear day is unforgettable. Truly a must-visit gem in Portugal! 🇵🇹💛"

"We visited Pena Palace – overall impressive, but with several downsides.

🔹 Positives:

The gardens, surroundings, and exterior architecture are truly stunning.

Staff were generally helpful and friendly.

🔹 Negatives:

Ticket prices are very high, and even if you buy online, you may still wait in line.

The interior is rather plain compared to the outside – nothing extraordinary. The real highlight is the exterior and gardens.

The restaurant was overpriced and tasteless, and one staff member was quite rude.

To get up the hill, there are minibuses, but they cost €3 per person, and they didn’t allow us with our stroller. On top of that, you need to buy a separate ticket for it, which felt like torture.

In general, it feels like they try to charge you for every single step you take.

⏱️ Tip:
Even if you only buy tickets for the gardens and outside, you can easily spend at least 3 hours there.

Best regards 🌸"

"The National Palace of Pena is a vibrant masterpiece that seems plucked straight from a storybook. Perched high on a hilltop in Sintra, its bold colors—sunset yellows, deep reds, and sky blues—make it one of the most visually striking palaces in Europe. The mix of architectural styles—Romantic, Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline—reflects Portugal’s rich and diverse history.

Inside, the rooms are beautifully preserved, offering a glimpse into royal life with ornate furnishings and stunning tile work. The panoramic views from the palace terraces are breathtaking, stretching across forests and toward the Atlantic Ocean.

It can get crowded, especially in peak season, so booking in advance is smart. Still, nothing takes away from the magic. Pena Palace is a must-visit—whimsical, majestic, and truly unforgettable.

You need to take a bus or taxi. There is no parking spot available. Also, 2 - 3 mins walk from the gate you can get a but that will take you directly to the castle. Its optional, you can also walk up to there. Form Pena castle you get a great view of the Moorish castle."
