What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking 'sea of clouds' and the surreal beauty of hiking above the mist. The challenging yet rewarding nature of the hike, coupled with spectacular sunrise and sunset opportunities, makes it a must-do. However, be prepared for crowds, especially at sunrise, and the demanding terrain.
"Free Parking was busy about 11am but did get a spot relatively quickly. Much quieter when we returned to car. There is a 3 euro charge to use trails in national park. Pay online and it covers many trails on island ( we were asked to prove on two other walks). It was cloudy and Misty, but after a short time walking we were above the clouds and wow. Beautiful stunning place. Words don't do it justice and higher up we got the better it got. Recommend a cloudy day, just adds to it. Cafe just before final climb to summit for a cold drink on a very hot day. ( guessing weather can be very different with winds snow etc. at other times of year). Path was busy, and we'll made. Note many of paths closed due to erosion."

"A must-do on the island. The route is short, but steep. But very rewarding. Certainty if you’re lucky enough like us, to end up above the clouds. The scenery is amazing. And the restaurant at the parking place is also amazing. It gives you all Alpine vibes. The parking is very challenging. Arriving at 9/9.30 is recommended. The sunrise crowd is on their way back but it’s too early for the masses. We found a spot easily. When we got back after 2,5 hrs parking was a mess"
Bart de Vos
"One of the best hikes to do in Madeira, with absolutely spectacular views. Try to go on a cloudy day so you can be above the clouds and witness the famous “sea of clouds”, a truly unique experience. The route is easy in terms of technical difficulty, though some people may need to pause for the elevation gain. The path is well-paved and clearly signposted."

Remember to protect your gear from wind and potential mist. The feeling of being on top of the world, surrounded by a sea of white, is an experience that many travelers describe as surpassing all expectations.
