El Toro with @3.l.1.s.3 and Barak. The most famous peak in the immediate vicinity of #potrerochico. Woke up at 4:50 am and hiked all the way up in dark to watch sunrise. Reached the “summit” at dawn but saw a higher peak to the south that’s not shown on the topo maps. Spontaneously decided to climb that, the tallest point on El Toro massif and unexpectedly turned out to be the hardest peak in thi...

The hike to El Toro peak in Puerto Rico was one of the highlights of our trip for me. We went in expecting it to be difficult since that’s what everything we read about it said, come to find out it wasn’t as hard as we thought it would be, it was tiring, it was beautiful, and it was muddy. 😂 Our first vacation in Utah @shakirartsy and I discovered our love of hiking and have since been pushing our...

The first multiday backpacking route in Puerto Rico! The NorEste Trail takes you from the highest peak in the rainforest all the way to the beaches on the northeast corner of the island. Our group completed a trek of 37 miles in 2 days. We started at El Toro Trailhead in El Yunque National Forest in Canóvanas and ended at the Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve in Fajardo. This was probably one of...

Reviews Summary

El Toro Peak offers a challenging but rewarding hike with spectacular summit views, often emerging from the clouds. Hikers praise the incredible scenery and the sense of accomplishment. However, be prepared for extremely muddy conditions, dense vegetation that can cause cuts, and potentially hazardous plants. The strenuous nature and trail difficulties are frequently mentioned drawbacks.

"Amazing views in the wilderness area. Trail is very challenging with many slippery rocks, mud, dense vegetation that will cut you up the last mile or so of the trail. Plus poisonous plants that left welts that burn and itch for days. Many down trees, a reroute due to a mud slide and a short section that barely is there above a huge mud slide below. Plan on 4 hours from the El Yunque circle road to the peak. Wear pants and long sleeves. Took us 7.5 hours round trip."

Adrien “Streamsage”

"Not for the faint of heart. A strenuous 5 mile round-trip to the summit, and easily the muddiest trail I’ve ever hiked. Bring an extra pair of shoes, socks, and shorts/pants to change into afterwards, as well as a garbage bag for your muddy hiking gear. Trust me on this. There is limited parking down by the trailhead, and a local restaurant nearby (Hacienda y Restaurant El Flamboyán) that's open a few days a week (Thursday-Sunday), so bring your own water, beer, and food if you're driving out. The view from the summit, up in the clouds, is well worth the effort."

Scott Kundla

"Not an easy hike. Hike can get a little muddy at some spots. Watch out for thin long razor leaves, they'll cut ya good!😖
The view is def worth it tho!"
