Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the 'spectacular' and 'indescribably beautiful' lunar landscapes of Piton de la Fournaise, often calling it a 'once-in-a-lifetime experience.' However, some travelers have encountered issues with overcrowding, leading to difficulties accessing parking, and have warned about potential car break-ins at the parking area.

"A very busy attraction. We were only able to get to about 1 kilometer from the car park as there were so many vehicles.
There were many tourists.
Be prepared for a tough long climb. Plenty of water and even a walking stick would be an advantage. It takes about 5 - 6 hours to complete the hike.
The signage on route is good.
The restaurant and toilets are totally unprepared for the volumes of tourists."

David Smythe

"Spectacular spectacular! Indescribably beautiful, and it feels as if I am walking on the moon. Quite steep stairs to go down and up but it was a pleasant walk. It was raining when we visited, so it wasn’t hot at all. I heard walking in the sun could be hot as there are no shadows. Once in a life time experience. I will remember this beautiful place for a very long time."

Eric J

"It is lovely driving to Le Volcan. The landscape is very unique, it feels as if you are on the moon. JUST BE AWARE OF BEING ROBBED at the parking area! Our car remote was jammed and all our cash stolen from our wallets in our handbags. We parked next to a car with a couple searching for something inside 'their car'. We only realized afterwards that they were stealing from that car as well."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Hiking the Volcano

The hike to the summit of Piton de la Fournaise is a significant undertaking, typically taking 5-6 hours round trip from the Pas de Bellecombe parking area. The trail is well-marked but demanding, featuring steep ascents and descents over volcanic rock and ash. Visitors often describe the landscape as lunar, with vast, barren expanses that feel otherworldly. Instagram+1

It's crucial to be well-prepared. Bring at least 2-3 liters of water per person, sturdy hiking boots with good grip, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and consider a walking stick for stability on the uneven terrain. The weather can change rapidly, so a light rain jacket is also advisable. While many visitors complete the hike independently, hiring a local guide can enhance the experience by providing geological insights and ensuring safety, especially if the weather is unpredictable or if you're less experienced. Reddit

For those seeking a less strenuous experience, shorter walks around the Pas de Bellecombe offer spectacular views without the full commitment of the crater hike. These shorter trails still allow you to appreciate the unique volcanic environment and capture stunning photographs. Always check the weather forecast and volcanic activity status before setting out. Instagram

Witnessing an Eruption

Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, and witnessing an eruption is a truly awe-inspiring, once-in-a-lifetime experience. When an eruption occurs, the volcano can put on a spectacular show of molten lava flowing down its slopes, often accompanied by glowing red rivers of fire. These events draw significant attention from volcanologists, scientists, and tourists alike. Instagram+2

Access during an eruption is strictly managed for safety. Authorities will issue alerts and may close off certain areas to the public. It's imperative to follow all official guidelines and safety instructions. While the spectacle is incredible, volcanic gases can be hazardous, and lava flows are dangerous. Always maintain a safe distance and never attempt to approach active lava. Instagram

Checking the official observatory website (Observatoire Volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise) is essential for real-time information on volcanic activity and any access restrictions. Even if an eruption isn't active, the volcanic landscape itself is a powerful testament to the Earth's geological forces. Instagram

The Drive and Surrounding Landscape

The journey to Piton de la Fournaise is as much a part of the experience as the volcano itself. The 'Route du Volcan' winds its way up the mountainside, offering increasingly dramatic vistas. As you ascend, the vegetation changes, transitioning from lush tropical flora to a more barren, almost lunar-like terrain as you approach the summit. This dramatic shift in landscape is a visual treat. Instagram+1

The volcanic plains surrounding the volcano are characterized by vast expanses of solidified lava, craters, and ash fields. These surreal, moon-like landscapes create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere. It feels like stepping onto another planet. The sheer scale and raw beauty of the geological formations are breathtaking. Instagram+1

While the drive is generally manageable, the final approach to the Pas de Bellecombe parking area can be rough. It's advisable to have a vehicle with decent clearance. The drive offers numerous pull-off points for photos, allowing you to capture the evolving scenery. Instagram
