What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Caraorman Forest and its sand dunes are described as a 'magical place' and a 'must-see' for their phenomenal ancient oaks and unique dune landscapes. However, some visitors found the forest 'boring' with little visible fauna, and expressed concerns about unregulated tourism practices and potential disturbance to wildlife.
"We got here through a trip facilitated by the guesthouse staff. We did not know exactly what will happen. When we arrived at Caraorman forest , we noticed that the entry is actually forbidden and there is a gate. So, did we do something illegal actually?.. Getting in Caraorman by high speed boat we went through narrow channels, disturbing the creatures - probably not ok either. The guy in the forest have info, the boat driver almost nothing. No restroom in the 5 hours trip at 120 ron for boat plus 35 ron for car into forest. No tickets, no receipts, all money given without fiscalization, so black money, nothing goes back into the environment . And it is the locals that break the rules first.. Authorities fail to do their part and the locals exploit the environment for money without consideration."

The Unique Ecology of Caraorman
The forest's ecosystem supports a variety of wildlife, though sightings can be unpredictable. Visitors have reported seeing young wild boars with their mothers, a heartwarming sight for nature enthusiasts. Birdwatching is also a possibility, with numerous species inhabiting the delta. However, it's important to note that some visitors have found the fauna to be less present or visible than expected, contributing to the 'wild' and sometimes elusive nature of the area.
Unfortunately, the unique beauty of Caraorman is also under threat from unregulated local exploitation. Concerns have been raised about 'black money' tourism, where tours operate without fiscalization, and the environment is disturbed for profit. Choosing responsible tour operators who prioritize conservation is crucial for preserving this delicate balance for future generations.
Experiencing Caraorman: Tours and Practicalities
When booking a tour, be mindful of the duration, typically around 5 hours, and the lack of facilities. There are no restrooms available on these trips, so planning ahead is essential. The cost can be around 120 RON for the boat, with potential additional fees for car access into the forest. It's important to note that many of these transactions are cash-based and lack official receipts, highlighting a need for greater transparency and regulation in the local tourism industry.
Some visitors have noted that while the forest itself is beautiful, the experience can be 'boring' if one expects constant wildlife sightings or a highly curated tour. The 'wild' nature of the area extends to its people as well, with some describing them as 'a bit wild.' Ultimately, a visit to Caraorman is about immersing yourself in a raw, untamed natural environment, appreciating its unique geological features and ancient trees, while being aware of the conservation challenges it faces.
