What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Scholars' Stairs for their unique historical charm and atmospheric beauty. The well-preserved wooden structure and the rewarding panoramic views from the top are major highlights. While the climb is manageable, some note minor wear on the steps.
"One of the most picturesque and unusual places in the Sighișoara citadel is the Wooden Stairs, also known as the Scholars’ Stairs. Built in the 17th century, these covered wooden steps were designed to help students reach the School on the Hill, especially during winter or bad weather.
The atmosphere is truly special: the old, well-preserved wood makes you feel like you are stepping back in time. The climb, though it may seem challenging at first (over 170 steps), is an authentic experience that leads you to one of the most beautiful panoramic points in the city, right next to the Church on the Hill.
For tourists, the Wooden Stairs are not just a practical pathway but also an attraction in their own right. They offer a glimpse into the medieval spirit of the citadel and into the daily life of its former inhabitants. The light filtering through the planks, the coolness of the wood, and the echo of footsteps on the stairs create a unique atmosphere.
Tip: Take a few minutes to climb slowly, touch the wooden railings, and look back toward the citadel – you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful view. This is a must-see stop for anyone visiting Sighișoara.
⭐ My rating: 5/5 – A place full of history, charm, and medieval authenticity. And a place where you can take incredibile photos if you can wait for the perfect light!"

"One of the main sightseeing spots in Sighișoara Citadel. Carries a history going back to 17th century, when it was constructed to protect pupils from adverse weather and not allow them get in visual contact with the cemetery."

"For the first time I counted 175 steps, and after that just have discovered that there are 176 .
Interesting way of the locals, for hundreds of years, to protect their children, on winter or rainy weather , on their way to school. And professors, too."
