What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Saxon Cemetery a peaceful and atmospheric historical site, often described as stepping into a fairytale. The beautiful, old gravestones and panoramic city views are highlights, though some note that certain areas are not well-maintained, contributing to its classical, fantasy feel. It's a worthwhile, quiet exploration away from the main tourist paths.
"A peaceful cemetery situated on the highest hill in Sighișoara. There are two entry points, one being at the top of the hill while the other at the bottom, near the wooden stairs.
The headstones are very beautiful and some of them are very old. It was a quiet and interesting experience to visit the cemetery."
Liviu-Cristian Mihon
"It is indeed quite a remote spot, but the effort that's needed to reach it is definitely worth it, as it is a hidden touristic landmark as much as it is a religious place. It can also be a nice vantage point to see the panorama of the city.
Some parts of it are really isolated, with old tombs that date even from the 1700s, crypts and a general Medieval vibe the whole place gives. It's not really well maintained, but this is not very irritating, as it still keeps a classical Central European fantasy feeling."
Ștefan Demetriade
"Awesome cemetery experience. Take your time to explore the stories of the tombstones."

Frequently Asked Questions
🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The Saxon Cemetery, also known as the Cemetery on the Hill, is located within the medieval citadel of Sighisoara. You can access it via two entry points: one at the top of the hill and another at the bottom near wooden stairs. It's a walk from the main town, but the journey through the citadel is part of the experience.
While it's within the citadel, some parts can feel a bit isolated. Following signs towards the Church on the Hill often leads you in the right direction. Locals might also be able to point you the way.
Many visitors combine a visit to the Saxon Cemetery with exploring the rest of the UNESCO-listed Sighisoara Citadel, including the Clock Tower and the Church on the Hill.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
No, entrance to the Saxon Cemetery is generally free. This makes it an accessible and wonderful spot to explore at your own pace.
As an outdoor historical site, there are no strict opening hours. It's generally accessible during daylight hours. However, it's best to visit when there's sufficient light for safety and photography.
Reviews suggest that while the cemetery has a classical Central European fantasy feeling, some parts are not extensively maintained. This contributes to its authentic, historical charm rather than being a detractor.
📸 📸 Photography
Absolutely! The weathered gravestones, ornate tombs, ivy-covered structures, and panoramic views of Sighisoara make it a photographer's dream. The moody atmosphere, especially in autumn, is particularly striking.
Golden hour, shortly after sunrise or before sunset, can offer beautiful lighting for capturing the cemetery's atmosphere. Overcast days can also enhance the moody, historical feel.
Look for the most ornate and oldest gravestones, the ivy-clad mausoleums, and any vantage points offering clear views of the citadel. The contrast between nature and the old stone is very photogenic.
🎫 🚶 Onsite Experience
Visitors describe the atmosphere as peaceful, quiet, and deeply atmospheric, often comparing it to stepping into a fairytale or a storybook. It's a place for contemplation and appreciating history.
You'll find a variety of beautiful and old headstones, crumbling tombs, and time-stained mausoleums nestled among trees and vegetation. The 'ravens of Sighisoara' are also a notable feature.
While not a museum, the tombstones themselves tell stories of past inhabitants. It offers a tangible connection to the history of the Saxon community in Sighisoara.
As it's an older, less commercialized site, don't expect extensive facilities like cafes or restrooms within the cemetery itself. It's best to be prepared beforehand.
