What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Perm-36 a deeply impressive and important historical site, offering a stark look at the Gulag system. While some wish for more interactive exhibits, the preserved buildings and the option for knowledgeable guides provide a powerful and somber experience. The remote location adds to its unique, reflective atmosphere.
"While it is good that they have saved this space and some of the buildings, I was disappointed that most of the items of daily life are reflected only as placards.
As it stands you have to bring a deep interest to appreciate it. I recognize I'm a spoiled American, but the potential to make this place live would really not be that difficult. Then they can engage and broaden the minds of the disinterested.
In example, there is some sort of a debarking machine rotting into the earth. In time it will topple over and I don't perceive they'll do anything about it. If they restored it's platform and found defunct milling machinery such as what was there, they can show how the prisoners made boards from timber. The space that was the work area for prisoners is now some sort of storage area for winter plows and can not be accessed.
With so many people assigned to do jobs that evade my perception of value (I had to navigate six people just to access the library) if some could be assigned to this place it could present this part of their heritage and be a powerful presentation.
PS - after attaching the photos I am feeling too harsh about the above... but not enough to change it."

"Visiting this originally preserved Gulag was a deeply impressive experience for me. The buildings were brought to life for me by my excellent guide Sergei, whose father and brother suffered in the Gulag system. Sergei speaks English reasonably well and explained me the what each building was for, how daily life in the Gulag was and why people would be sent there. There are still several rooms originally furnished. I would strongly suggest calling before you come to arrange a tour in English because there aren't many signs. They also have an audio guide on a smartphone in several languages.
To get here from Perm, take a bus to Chusovoy (every 20-30mins, it takes about 1-1.5hs), get off at the (closed) petrol station on the highway and walk the last 2kms to the museum. On the way back you can flag down a passing bus or hitchhike back to Perm."

"This museum is a very unique place and food for thought about individual freedom of a person. I strongly recommend it, as it's not something that's often talked about, though a big part of Russian history."
