It may sound a stupid question because this part of Russia is mostly uninhabited except for some big settlements like Irkutsk, Vladivostok, but are there here some of you guys who live there, if yes how is it?

Born and raised on the east cost of Kamchatka, have been to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Irkutsk, Chita, Ulan-Ude, Vladivostok. This part of the country is less developed then the west part but pretty livable though.

Why is Eastern Russia so empty of people? What goes on over there?

I love trying to find unusual places to someday visit. In searching around on the map I found this area just north of Japan. Theres just a handful of cities and they look very desolate, but the mountains and wilderness seen magical! Has anyone been?

Would this area be more developed if the US and Russia were close allies?

A bit more? Probably, but not a lot. At most I'd see places like Anchorage and Vladivostok or Petropavlovsk being important for trade and cargo shipping, but not much more. The centrepieces of Russia's economy (Moscow and Petersburg) are closer to New York, after all

"Petropavlovsk (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky) is a port city and the the capital Kamchatka oblast. It is situated in northern Kazakhstan, far eastern Russia. The city of Petropavlovsk provides access to Kamchatka Peninsula and is located near its southern tip on the eastern coast. It has a small museum with excellent collection of indigenous and Russian handicrafts revealing the history of exploration and culture of Kamchatka Peninsula. Sights include the Orthodox Cathedral and a monument dedicated to Vitus Bering and lieutenant Alex Chirikof. They established the town in 1740 and named it after their sailing vessels - the Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Tourists can also stand atop a close by hillside and admire the unique sight of a trio of volcanoes ringing the bay."

Sergey Gorshkov

"There's only one restroom, although it's wheelchair accessible, which is a bit of a stretch for a seaport, and the waiting room needs to be warmer. Otherwise, it's a nice building."

Tere Tere

"This is also the Sivuchi rookery. You can enter the port area if you turn your face brick-face. It's a 10-minute walk from the gate to the rookery."
