"Previously, there were two wooden churches on this site, some of the first in the city, then a stone temple was built. In 1803, a new high bell tower was added to it. And then, in 1851, the temple itself was rebuilt. The architect was Abraham Melnikov, a participant in the competition for the construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. Doesn't it remind you? Since 1909, the cathedral became a cathedral. And after the revolution, it was closed and disfigured, turning it into a vegetable storehouse. The bell tower suffered less, no economic use was found for it. In the 70s of the last century, the cathedral was vacated and restoration began as a museum treasure. After the collapse of the Union, the cathedral was restored, although it is almost a new replica, but similar. Now the temple is active ..."

Architectural History and Restoration
However, the 20th century brought significant challenges. During the Soviet era, the cathedral was closed, disfigured, and used as a vegetable storehouse, with its iconostasis and frescoes destroyed. The bell tower, fortunately, suffered less damage. In the 1970s, restoration began, initially as a museum. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the cathedral was transferred back to the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1990s, with services resuming in 1996. While the current structure is largely a replica, it faithfully represents its historical grandeur.
The construction was largely funded by Rybinsk merchants, with the Vyazmin merchants being major contributors. The bell tower's construction predates the church by 50 years, possibly designed by Stepan Vorotilov. Notably, the cathedral narrowly escaped destruction during the construction of a bridge across the Volga in the 20th century, with the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War ultimately saving it.
Experiencing the Interior and Bell Tower
For those seeking a more expansive view and a deeper connection to the structure, climbing the bell tower is highly recommended. However, access is not always straightforward. It's typically only possible with a guide, and visitors are advised to inquire at the candle box for the guide's phone number to arrange a visit, clarify prices, and confirm dates. This guided ascent offers a unique perspective on the city and the cathedral's impressive scale.
