What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Victory Square Eternal Flame for its solemnity and historical significance. The Eternal Flame and the surrounding monuments are highlighted as powerful symbols of remembrance. While the site is generally well-maintained, some reviews mention ongoing repairs or minor graffiti, though these rarely detract from the overall impactful experience.
"The initial arrangement of the park along the fortress wall began in 1911, on the eve of the centenary of the Patriotic War of 1812. The following year, in honor of the anniversary of the Battle of Borodino, a bronze bust of M. I. Kutuzov (sculptor M. I. Strakhovskaya) and the City Primary School in Memory of 1812 were opened. The exterior of the building resembles a medieval castle. Now there is a museum "Smolensk Region during the Great Patriotic War". In 1913, the famous "Monument with Eagles" was opened (author - engineer-lieutenant colonel N. S. Shutsman, sculptor S. R. Nadolsky).
In the park in memory of heroes along the fortress wall, burials of heroes began since the Great Patriotic War. Now it is the famous necropolis of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. In 1975, Hero of the Soviet Union Guards Senior Sergeant Mikhail Egorov, who raised the Victory Banner over the Reichstag in 1945, was buried near the fortress wall. Earlier, in 1968, he opened the Eternal Flame laid here.
In 1987, busts of commanders of the Patriotic War of 1812 were installed in the Heroes' Memory Square, and in 2006, the Alley of Hero Cities was opened. In general, now this is a large memorial square that is definitely worth visiting when visiting Smolensk."

"August 21. The park is under repair. I hope it won't last long. I walked around and looked at everything I could. It's very good that there is a park where you can get information and pay tribute to the heroes. An unusual monument. There is a small alley of heroes of 1812. And of course the monument to Kutuzov."

"Approaching this place along Dzerzhinsky Street from Pobeda Square, I was struck by the calm, unpretentious solemnity of the square. Even the graffiti in Latin script by local slackers on the corner didn't spoil the impression.
It was created very decorously, nobly, and worthy of the memory of heroic ancestors. Then all this leads to the Donets Tower, the Alley of Hero Cities, and the eternal flame with the burial sites in the Fortress Wall. Majestic!!! Stern!! Mournful!
I subscribe to every word of M.I. Kutuzov's letter to the residents of Smolensk..."
