What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Volga Embankments for their monumental beauty, expansive river views, and the opportunity for long, pleasant walks. The blend of natural scenery with historical and industrial architecture is often highlighted as a unique draw. Some reviews touch upon the historical context of certain sites, like hydroelectric dams, acknowledging their complex past.
"Monumental. Beautiful views. Of course, one could argue endlessly about this place's sad contribution to the region's ecology, but truly, Stalin's Empire-style industrial architecture is grandiose. I recommend walking along the dam to the lock and back. You can even walk down to the Volga. The Uglich Hydroelectric Power Station, one of the oldest hydroelectric power stations in Russia, was commissioned in 1940 and played a crucial role in providing Moscow with electricity during the Great Patriotic War. Construction of the station took place between 1935 and 1955, primarily by Gulag prisoners."

"One of Russia's oldest hydroelectric power plants was commissioned in 1940. When it was launched, 213 settlements were flooded and submerged. Some cities became a kind of Atlantis."

"The hydroelectric power station is certainly outdated, but I think the regional authorities will find the money and carry out a large-scale reconstruction of the hydroelectric power station."
