"Notre Dame des Laves" Piton Sainte Rose, cher à mon cœur. Ce fut mon premier poste d'enseignante, année scolaire 1972 / 1973. 3 ans d'âge de différence entre mes élèves et moi. Certains m'écrivaient même des lettres d'amour qu'ils glissaient dans les rédactions. Des débuts durs car j'avais une classe de transition, qui a connu ça ? Mais ça m'a conforté dans mon désir d'enseigner. Bon week-end mo...

Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awestruck by Notre Dame des Laves, marveling at its miraculous survival amidst the 1977 lava flows. The stark contrast between the church and the surrounding solidified lava is described as both ominous and fascinating, regardless of religious belief. It's considered a worthwhile stop for its unique story and visual impact. Reddit

"As an agnostic you can’t help but question your own convictions: right in front of a church of all places the lava flows split and spared it in a seemingly miraculous way. Ominous and fascinating at the same time."

Martin K.

"You don't have to be a believer to appreciate how special a building standing in the middle of a river of lava is. Pretty little place inside and some newspaper clips and other info at the back of the church. No guide on site. Free of charge and plenty of parking available next door. The extend of the miracle is obviously evident on the outside Across the road is a tourist trap where you can get junk food. From our limited knowledge of French it looks like there is also a museum in that complex, closed when we were there on a Friday. From here drive south towards St Philippe on the "Lava Road" to appreciate the full destructive power of a volcano."

Mel Klos

"It really brings home the power of the lava flow and how miraculous it is that this church still stands....
Beautiful stained glass windows and newspaper articles on your left as you enter - depicts the series of events as they unfolded on that fateful period in 1977"
