Reviews Summary

Visitors find Piazza della Transalpina fascinating for its unique position straddling Italy and Slovenia, offering a symbolic experience of borderless Europe. While some note ongoing construction, the historical context and the novelty of standing in two countries at once are consistently praised as highlights. Reddit

"This is a small square.

And a pretty poor one at that.

Directly outside Nova Gorica train station.

But it's important because it marks the border between Slovenia and Italy. The border fence is long gone. The Slovenian half is called Trg Evrope and the Italian half Piazzale della Transalpina. You can have one foot in Slovenia and one foot in Italy!

There is a small exhibition of what life was like with the border fence."

David Smith

"It is a building site. Don’t bother visiting it until 2025"

Luke Haughton

"Honestly quite a fun and also fascinating border crossing, with the fun idea of being in like almost the same city when crossing over. Its quite the experience to have your body stand between the line, and the history behind this place is also extremely relevant."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Border Experience

Piazza della Transalpina, also known as Trg Evrope, is a remarkable testament to the dissolution of borders within Europe. For decades, this square was bisected by a physical border fence, a stark reminder of political divisions. Today, the fence is gone, and the square has been redeveloped to symbolize unity and cross-border cooperation. Visitors can literally stand with one foot in Italy and the other in Slovenia, a truly unique and symbolic experience. Reddit

This transformation is particularly poignant given the region's history. The redevelopment efforts, especially in preparation for Nova Gorica's designation as a European Capital of Culture, have focused on creating a seamless, shared public space. The aim is to foster a sense of common identity and encourage interaction between the two cities and their residents. Instagram+1

Beyond the symbolic act of crossing the border, the square often features historical exhibitions detailing life during the era of the border fence. These displays offer a glimpse into the past and highlight the significance of the changes that have occurred. Reddit

Cultural Hub and Redevelopment

Piazza della Transalpina is more than just a border crossing; it's evolving into a vibrant cultural hub. The redevelopment of the square, particularly the creation of the 'Epicenter' – a new cultural center – aims to provide a versatile space for various events and activities. Instagram

This area has been a focal point for cultural programming, especially during Nova Gorica's tenure as a European Capital of Culture. The square has hosted numerous performances, festivals, and artistic installations, drawing visitors and locals alike. Instagram+1 The promenade and public gardens surrounding the railway station have been designed to integrate these cultural elements, creating a green buffer and an inviting atmosphere. Instagram

The ongoing redevelopment signifies a commitment to shared European identity and cultural exchange. The project aims to functionally and contextually integrate adjacent areas and buildings, making the square a dynamic center for both Italian and Slovenian communities. Instagram
