Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Trnovo Forest Plateau's stunning natural beauty, particularly its vibrant autumn colors and unique karst landscapes. The well-maintained roads and abundant trails make it accessible for exploration, though some note the limited dining options within the plateau itself. It's a highly recommended destination for nature lovers and photographers seeking tranquility and breathtaking scenery.

"Leaving Gorizia behind, crossing the Slovenian border, passing the villages of Tarnova and Loqua, you find yourself immersed in a fairy-tale environment...
A beautiful karst plateau, offers pristine woods and forests: beech trees, red and silver firs, sinkholes, dolines, caves are some of the naturalistic aspects that this oasis offers.
Furthermore, the Dinaric Alps act as a backdrop and if you want to look at something from above, you have to climb to the king of the forest: the Mali Golak!
A few hundred meters along a path immersed in greenery, you find the Srednji and the Veliki Golak.
I am almost sure that with the colors of autumn, this place becomes something indescribable...."

"A true forest that you can sense even from a simple drive.
The road that runs through it is perfect, with only 3 km of dirt road that looks like it will soon be paved.
A great job done without altering or degrading the forest.
Numerous clearings allow you to leave your car and explore on foot, with due care.
In autumn, you can come every week and find it always different and pleasant, with a thousand colors from green, to yellow, orange, and deep red, all the way to brown.
Always worth a trip."

Mauro Gasparo

"Worth a visit.
Trnovski gozd, together with the neighboring Banjšice, is the northwesternmost outgrowth of the mighty Dinaric Mountains. The mountain world of Trnovski gozd is karst, without running water on the surface and divided by closed depressions, hollows, hills and mountains, caves, chasms and small karst formations: škraplja, žlebiči, škavnica and the like.
Among the karst phenomena, caves with eternal ice and snow are particularly important. Due to the classic description (locus claicus) of the vegetation in the eastern part, the 385 m deep and 1550 m long Great Ice Cave in Paradana is world famous. In the past, ice was transported from it even to Egypt. Trnovski gozd is overgrown with a mixed beech-fir forest. The highest point is Mali Golak (1495 m), which is bare at the top, and below is covered with dwarf willow and rowan. Protected, endemic plants, such as the Carniolan primrose, have found their place in the rock crevices here.
The Trnovo Forest is characterized by two nature reserves: Paradana with the natural monument Velika Ledena Jama and Golaki with Smrekova Draga and the natural monument Smrečje. Nature lovers can also visit numerous other interesting natural heritage sites that the locals will be happy to show you."
