What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Punda Maria offers a deeply authentic bush experience, praised for its tranquility and abundant wildlife, especially elephants. While not luxurious, its peaceful atmosphere, friendly staff, and clean facilities make it a soul-soothing escape. Some find the baboon presence annoying and the lack of cell signal a drawback, but most agree the unique charm and ongoing improvements make it a worthwhile visit.
"I recently visited Punda Maria Rest Camp from the 24th to the 28th of September 2025 (camped) . If you’re looking for glitter and glam, this is not the place for you. But if you love the bush, the sounds of nature, and a peaceful escape for the soul, Punda Maria is the perfect destination. Monkeys, baboons, and many other creatures call this place home, which only adds to its authentic bush experience. The camp is peaceful, the staff are kind, the ablutions are clean and the water warm. The pool was blue and the shop was stocked. The restaurant offers delicious food and the hiking trail in the camp is a pleasant walk along the koppie.
Regarding the watering hole next to the camp which is still empty. I had the opportunity to speak to the camp manager about it, and I walked away with great respect for what they are working toward. The previous watering hole was never officially planned—elephants had created a muddy slush that unfortunately trapped many animals, and rangers spent countless hours rescuing them. Because of this, the park wanted to close the watering hole completely.
However, Punda Maria’s management fought hard to keep it, understanding how much it means to visitors and wildlife alike. The park eventually agreed and brought in architects and engineers to design a safe, sustainable, and long-term solution which will keep the animals safe and happy. It’s a much bigger project than it may seem, but rest assured that the team is working tirelessly. Once completed, the new watering hole will be officially announced.
For now, patience is key—great things are on the way for Punda Maria. In the meantime, the camp continues to offer that unique sense of tranquility and charm.
All in all, a wonderful experience."

"Very nice camping area to visit for 2-3 nights. Bathrooms were maintained up to 3 times a day. Lots of game came to the fence. Staff very friendly.
Nice pool, small shop, and restaurant. Stunning bird hide overlooking the water hole. Sad it has not been fixed yet.
However, very isolated in the park though. The monkey, and baboon issue was annoying also. Bathrooms were quite small, and over crowded, during peak hours. Not many shaded areas, near power outlets.
However, had a great time there. Would recommend 👍"

"Above and Beyond – A Heartfelt Thank You to Garth at Punda Maria Rest Camp
In December 2024, our family experienced what could have been a devastating situation — but thanks to Garth, the incredible manager at Punda Maria Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park, it became a powerful reminder of human kindness and exceptional service.
While en route to Kruger, our 4x4’s engine seized, leaving us stranded for over seven hours just outside the park gates. To make matters worse, we were towing our own camping trailer, had no food, limited cell reception, and were travelling with our two-year-old child. It was an exhausting, stressful, and vulnerable situation.
When we finally reached someone, Garth responded without hesitation. He personally dispatched a game vehicle to find and rescue us — not only towing our broken-down 4x4, but our camping trailer as well.
By the time we finally arrived at Punda Maria Camp, after 10pm, Garth went even further: he welcomed us warmly, arranged a delicious dinner, and put our family up in a beautiful chalet to ensure we had a safe and restful night after such a long and difficult day.
This wasn’t just outstanding service — it was genuine compassion and care. Garth went far beyond his duty to help a family in need, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
To Garth and the entire team at Punda Maria: thank you. You gave us comfort, dignity, and safety when we needed it most. Your actions will never be forgotten.
If you're heading to Punda Maria, know this — you're in the care of someone truly exceptional."
