Reviews Summary

Paarl Bird Sanctuary offers free entry and a diverse range of bird species, including nesting colonies, making it appealing for birdwatchers. However, recent reports highlight significant security concerns and limited access to certain areas, which can detract from the visitor experience. The effectiveness of viewing platforms can also be inconsistent due to water levels, and occasional odors from the adjacent treatment plant are present.

"This place is practically dead. There are some long forgotten remains, even some kind of entry log. But to get to the viewing spot you to go through some fence, that might just be closed when the water threatment facility is constructed further.
There were birds present, but could not really see them as the viewing tower has no water nearby when the lake is relatively dry."

Victor Savenije

"Awesome place, with not a lot of publicity.
It is free and securiy is good (and visible).
It next to the Waste Water Treatment plant which has the side effect of a few odd odours, but provides a great opertunity for learning the kids where all the water goes when flushing the toilet."

Riaan Doorduin

"Reports on poor security were confirmed during my visit. Only the ponds enclosed in the security fence can be visited without a security guard in the car (ponds 2 and 3), but have limited interest, notably Nesting grey headed gulls with chicks.

Doing a quick tour of outside ponds the situation seems to have deteriorated. Bird hides are gone, wood collectors are walking on the roads used for bird watching and an informal settlement grows very close.

The security guard at the gate re-iterated same information as other reviews. Assaults, muggings and stabbings have been occurring since 2 years and security company has implemented this protocol, though I'm not sure security guards are too keen either.

Hopefully the situation improves as the site looks interesting."
