"A serene, tranquil experience at the graveyard in Pelgrims Rust. Get an information leaflet beforehand so you can immerse yourself. So many baby and children died; even two from the same family. Well kept graveyard; quiet, very interesting. Take your time."

"Tucked away in the hills of Mpumalanga, Pilgrim’s Rest is a town frozen in time—a relic of the 1870s gold rush, where fortune-seekers once dreamed of striking it rich. Amid its weathered buildings and whispering trees lies an old cemetery, a final resting place for those who met their fate in this rugged frontier. But among the aging tombstones, one grave stands apart.
Neat and well-kept, it bears no name—only the chilling inscription: “Robbers' Grave.” Unlike the others, it lies at an angle, out of line with the rest, a quiet mark of disgrace. Local legend says the man buried there was a thief caught red-handed. In a time when justice was swift and merciless, he was sentenced to death, his final resting place forever branded by his crime.
Yet, strangely, the Robbers' Grave is the neatest in the cemetery. No weathered neglect, no crumbling edges—just a simple, stark reminder of a forgotten man whose story lingers like a whisper on the wind. Who was he? What did he steal? And why, even in death, does his grave receive such care?
Perhaps it's a sign of silent respect, a recognition that every soul—sinner or saint—deserves remembrance. Or maybe, just maybe, the past refuses to let go of its secrets."

"Visited for the first time in 1998 and this grave left a lasting impression on me. Definitely go say hello if in the area! A bit of background: In 1873, Pilgrim’s Rest and the surrounding area was flooded with prospectors hoping to find their fortunes in the second wave of the Transvaal gold rush. It was a rough place with men putting their lives on the line every day. In the same year, it is alleged that a man was caught and convicted of robbing prospector’s tents. He was banished from the area, but soon returned and was shot on sight by an unnamed person. This zero tolerance approach may have brought some law and order to a rapidly growing, potentially rowdy population. He was buried alone on a hill, but not for long as the town’s cemetery soon grew around him. For his sins, he lies there forever in the unambiguous ‘Robber’s Grave' and generations of passers-through have stopped to say hello to him. He may be anonymous, but his story says quite a bit about the time he lived in and his grave activates the past in a way that endures far better than a dry paragraph in an old textbook. This is what draws me to cemeteries - they're so alive in the stories that they hold."
