Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Geumsansa Temple for its historical significance, particularly the Mireukjeon Hall and its giant Buddha statue. The serene atmosphere and beautiful natural surroundings, enhanced by the walking trail, are frequently highlighted as major draws. Some note that photography is restricted inside the main hall.

"Of all the temples I have been to in my 20 years living here, this one is one of the most impressive, imho (the others would be Haeinsa, Hwaeomsa, Songgwangsa and Bulguksa). It has more than a thousand year old temple with one of the tallest Buddha statue I have ever seen. Although I am not a Buddhism practitioner I really enjoy going to Korean temples because they are located in mountains (so they offer beautiful sceneries) but also serene, quiet, peaceful and house many important treasures. This one is no exception. There are several treasures in this temple, and Buddha statues are abundant. However I only see the ones in Mireukjeon Hall (which is the most important hall) does not allow you to take pictures.

To get to the temple you can walk the walking trail for about 400 meters through artificial waterfall, small streams, kids playground, and a little forest, or go directly to the main entrance with extra fee. We chose the walking trails to see nature. The trees are tall, providing good shade from the heat.

The temple and the trails are clean and very well kept. We enjoy the walk. And nearby the temple complex there are restaurants, mostly offer mountains vege bibimbap (no meat), which is especially delicious cos they are fresh.

The temple is quite near Jeonju (about half hour) so if you are nearby Jeonju, do make a visit, it will not disappoint. Take note that the temple might be very crowded if you go there in autumn."

"This Temple rests quietly beneath the slopes of Moak Mt., echoing over a millennium of spiritual devotion.

Located in Gimje, Jeollabuk-do, The Temple was founded in the year 599, making it one of Korea’s oldest and most historically significant Buddhist temples. Its most iconic structure is the Mireukjeon Hall, designated as National Treasure No. 62, and notable for being the only surviving three-story wooden building of its kind in Korea. Inside stands a majestic 11-meter-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, radiating serenity and grandeur."

"I had an extra day in Jeonju and decided to come here, and it was absolutely amazing. You can get here from the city centre with a short ride on a local bus and then a small walk to the temple. It was an incredible experience! There was nobody and you can simply sit and listen to the monks. I really recommend it!"
