Reviews Summary

Mireuksaji Temple Site is lauded for its majestic Baekje-era grandeur and the impressive, restored Western Stone Pagoda, offering a profound connection to ancient Korean Buddhist culture. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained grounds and the educational National Iksan Museum. However, the site's accessibility via public transport is a significant drawback for many, particularly international tourists, with infrequent bus services posing a challenge. Reddit

"Mireuksaji Temple Site – A Majestic Legacy of the Baekje Kingdom
Mireuksaji, located in Iksan, is the largest temple site from the Baekje era and a place where the essence of ancient Korean Buddhist culture comes vividly to life. Spread across a vast and tranquil plain, the ruins and towering stone pagodas evoke a profound sense of awe at first sight. Among them, the Western Pagoda stands out as the oldest stone pagoda in Korea, recently restored to further highlight its historical significance.

Every time I visit Mireuksaji, I’m deeply moved by the grandeur and refined cultural spirit of the ancient Baekje Kingdom. It’s a place where history breathes through stone and silence.

Within the site, the National Iksan Museum offers a deeper understanding of Baekje culture through its impressive collection of excavated artifacts. Well-maintained walking paths, rest areas, and a cozy café make it a perfect destination for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a peaceful cultural retreat.

Mireuksaji has been officially selected by WalkintoKorea as a "Must Visit Place in Korea," making it a top recommendation for both domestic and international travelers."

"Not so foreigner-friendly in terms of commuting. The museum and historical sites are nice and worth visiting, but for foreigners, it may not be worthwhile. Commuting is difficult; only two buses go there every two hours. I think the city should add more buses so that more tourists can easily access the historical places."

"Mireuksa was the largest Buddhist Temple during ancient Baekje kingdom. As per Korean history this temple was built in 7th century. This is UNESCO world heritage site. If you are near Jenonju or Gunsan and history enthusiast, then you will like this site. There are two stone pagodas which are restored by archaeological department of Korea based on available historical information. There is one museum just opposite to this historical site. Archaeological department started excavation of this place 1980 and it continued for many years. You can see ruins on the temple on site. I visited on 10 March 2024."
