Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Seonjeongneung Royal Tombs for its serene atmosphere and historical significance, offering a peaceful escape within the bustling city. The convenient location and affordable entry are also highlights, though some note the limited interpretation available on-site.

"Great morning spent just wandering about destressing from the busy surrounding streets. Lots of birds, heaps of beautiful trees, some flowers and about 4 degrees cooler that outside. When you go, take the time to appreciate what the place is and where it is as it really is worth it."

W Xavier John

"Realistically, this is a city park dedicated to the royal tombs. The park is big, clean and very well maintained, with total 3 royal tombs to visit, the KRW 1,000 entrance fee is definitely worth it.

Visited around noon, can see a lot of locals coming here for a walk, especially office workers around the area. Despite the crowd, the walk was relaxing. Can easily spend 1 to 2 hours here.

While there is information about the architecture, some of them are only available in the Korean language. Although there's a floor plan available in the pavilion, but the pavilion is about 5 to 10 minutes walk to Seoulleung Royal Tomb. It would be better if there was a floor plan by the tomb explaining the design and meanings of each stone statue, this will definitely help visitors to understand Korean history and culture better."

Jo Lee

"Only KRW1,000 to enter and truly lovely to walk around. Well shaded, easy paths and plentiful signage. Right in the middle of Seoul - it's an oasis."

The Royal Residents

Seonjeongneung Royal Tombs is the final resting place for two Joseon Dynasty monarchs: King Seonjo (reigned 1567–1608) and his second wife, Queen Inmok, as well as King Yeong (reigned 1544–1545) and his wife, Queen Shin. The tombs are arranged in a traditional layout, reflecting the era's architectural and spiritual beliefs. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its historical significance and preservation. Reddit

Unlike some other royal tomb complexes that are spread out, Seonjeongneung is unique in that it houses two separate tomb mounds within a single, enclosed park. This arrangement offers a more concentrated historical experience. Visitors can observe the distinct structures and the surrounding natural landscape that was carefully chosen to harmonize with the burial sites. Reddit

The tombs are marked by stone altars, spirit posts, and guardian statues, all designed to honor and protect the deceased royalty. The peaceful atmosphere, enhanced by the surrounding trees and open spaces, invites contemplation and a connection to Korea's rich past. It's a place where history and nature coexist beautifully. Reddit

A Tranquil Escape in Gangnam

Nestled within the bustling Gangnam district, Seonjeongneung Royal Tombs offers a surprising sanctuary of peace and natural beauty. The contrast between the modern skyscrapers surrounding the park and the ancient tombs within is striking. This juxtaposition makes it a unique spot for both historical exploration and a moment of quiet reflection away from the city's energy. Reddit

The grounds are meticulously maintained, featuring well-kept walking paths that meander through lush greenery. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk, breathing in the fresh air and appreciating the serene environment. The natural lighting, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, transforms the site into a picturesque landscape, making it a favorite for photographers and those seeking a tranquil experience. Reddit

Despite its central location, Seonjeongneung is often less crowded than other major historical sites in Seoul, particularly on weekdays. This allows for a more intimate and unhurried exploration of the tombs and their surroundings. It's an ideal destination for travelers looking to experience a slice of Korean history and culture without the overwhelming crowds. Reddit
