What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Puerta de Granada for its historical significance as a gateway to Granada and its pleasant location near a park with scenic views. While it's a single-arch structure and not as grand as some other city gates, its charm lies in its historical context and the tranquil viewpoint it offers.
"This gate leads from Antequera to Granada. During the medieval period, it played an important role in the wars between the Kingdom of Castile and the Nasrid Kingdom."

The Puerta de Granada - the way to Granada.
This archway dating back to the mid 18th-century, although having its upper section renovated and changed subsequently, marks the place where the road to Granada originally entered - or left - the town of Antequera.
Slightly out of the way, but in a pleasant position near a little park overlooking the river, you can reach it on the way back from visiting the Dolmenes. Leaving the Dolmenes site going back towards the town, you come almost immediately to a crossroads with a triangular flowerbed in the centre. the road straight ahead leads up hill, you take the street to the left and follow it round.
You soon come, on your left, to a wide esplanade viewpoint (although the view over the little river is nothing much to write home about), with those "playground Fitness machines for grown-ups" that the Spanish are so fond of.
Just a few yards further on is the Arch. On its first side it has a statue of Our lady of Rocio, on the other the Town coat of arms. On top is a wrought-iron structure which seemed at first sight be a weathervane, but that I then realised was an ornate cross.
Unlike the Puerta de Estepa, it has only one arch. You can walk but not drive through it - there is a brick pavement with a step up to prevent crazy drivers trying to do just that!.
