Reviews Summary

This hike is lauded as one of Mallorca's most beautiful, offering stunning Mediterranean views and a journey through ancient olive groves and stone terraces. While the terrain is rocky and challenging, many find the effort worthwhile for the unique historical landscape and the charm of Deià. Some reviewers found the path less scenic than expected, with long stretches between private property walls, but the overall consensus points to a rewarding experience for those prepared for the trek. Reddit

"The stretch of the GR221 from Sóller to Deià is one of the most beautiful hikes in Mallorca. The trail winds through olive groves, stone terraces, and pine forests, with stunning views of the Mediterranean along the way. It’s well-marked and not overly difficult, though there are some steady climbs and rocky paths that require good footwear.

The walk takes around 2.5–3.5 hours depending on pace, and finishing in Deià makes it extra rewarding — especially if you continue down to Cala Deià for a swim or drink by the sea.

A must-do hike if you’re in the Tramuntana mountains!"

Philip Lundgren

"My time here was spent trail running, several times including this section with loops as well as out & back trips. It's extremely rocky difficult terrain in sections definitely not for a relaxing jaunt but also super fun challenging sessions with the correct technical footwear and water bottles. I'd call this area a true wonder of almost biblical proportions considering the work doe to create the trails and walled terraces up and around the valley just totally truly amazing."

Darren O'Grady

"One of the most beautiful sections of the GR221! Absolutely stunning views!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The GR221: Mallorca's Dry Stone Route

The Camí de Castelló Sóller–Deià is a segment of the famous GR221, the Ruta de Pedra en Sec (Dry Stone Route). This long-distance trail traverses the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcasing the traditional dry-stone construction techniques that have shaped the landscape for centuries. The route highlights the ingenuity of Mallorcan farmers who created terraces and pathways on steep, rocky terrain. Reddit

This particular section is celebrated for its beauty, winding through ancient olive groves and fragrant pine forests. While some sections can be challenging with their rocky paths and stone paving, the effort is rewarded with stunning vistas of the Mediterranean. It's a journey that connects you with the island's agricultural heritage and its dramatic natural beauty. Reddit

Hikers often praise the authenticity of the experience, noting the historical significance of the dry-stone walls and terraces. It's a chance to step back in time and appreciate the enduring relationship between the Mallorcan people and their environment. Reddit

Navigating the Terrain and Trail Conditions

The Camí de Castelló is characterized by its rocky and uneven terrain. Many sections are paved with stones, which can be challenging to walk on, especially when wet or loose. Reviewers often describe it as a 'painful stony path' if not properly equipped. Reddit Therefore, sturdy hiking boots or trail running shoes with good grip are absolutely essential. Casual sneakers or sandals are strongly discouraged and can lead to discomfort or injury. Reddit

The trail is generally well-marked as part of the GR221 network, but it's always wise to have a map or a GPS device, especially if you plan to explore any alternative routes or detours. Some hikers have noted that while the path is clear, the 'views are short on sea views' for certain stretches, with much of the walk being between private property walls. Reddit However, the payoff comes with the expansive views that do appear, making the challenging sections worthwhile. Reddit
