"They say that during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), General Franco promised the Muslim combatants fighting on his side that if they won, he would order the construction of the most beautiful mosque in Ceuta.
I don't know if this is the most beautiful Muslim temple in the city, but it seems that way to me.
As for the dictator's promise, there seems to be some truth to it, since the mosque was built with great luxury during the difficult post-war years. More importantly, over the lintel of the main door there is a tablet alluding to General Franco's words."
